Audie Award Finalist, Classic, 2013

Narrator Dan Stevens (Downton Abbey) presents an uncanny performance of Mary Shelley's timeless gothic novel, an epic battle between man and monster at its greatest literary pitch. In trying to create life, the young student Victor Frankenstein unleashes forces beyond his control, setting into motion a long and tragic chain of events that brings Victor to the very brink of madness. How he tries to destroy his creation, as it destroys everything Victor loves, is a powerful story of love, friendship, scientific hubris, and horror.

Not what I was expecting

Only criticism is the amount of time, in some sections, spent describing scenery. Other than that, this work was not what I had expected. American culture has reshaped the monster so much over the years, that reading the original work was enlightening. I also enjoyed all the messages of the story. There are so many takeaways. I wish I could discuss this work with a few others now.

Heartbreaking!

What a terrific story!
What an incredible imagination!
And Dan Stevens’ performance only improved it.
I read the physical book while simultaneously listening to this audiobook.

I thought the story was exceptionally well told and the writing definitely brought it to life.

What I enjoyed the most is that we have the monster’s perspective.

The author was 18 years old and this book was written in 1818, so take that into consideration.

Has Not Lost Any of its Power!

Dan Steven's masterful narration carries the full horror, power, and poignancy of Shelley's tragic and touching tale of Dr. Frankenstein and his "monster". If you've never read it - then listen to this version. It's outstanding. Stevens makes it even harder to believe that Shelley began the book at the tender age of 18! #Audible1

Mournful and reflective classic

The story is mournful and so, the narrator maintains that mournful tone. Sometimes it became too much but I’m not sure if it is the narrator’s issue or the melodrama of Shelley’s romanticism. Nevertheless I enjoyed hearing this tale of woe of scientific hubris, of regret and attending consequences, and of the monster’s self-reflections. And oh, the monster has far better vocabulary and rhetoric than I could ever hope to have!

A perennial classic.

Far and above the Hollywood versions, this story is a poignant and brutal dive into the best and worst of humanity.
Beautifully narrated.

Not like the movies. Listen to this sci-fi story

One of the first sci-fi novels. If you only know the story from movies, listen to the original.
Very gothic - everything is beautiful and tragic.

Saddest Monster

The reading of this was easy to listen to and the different voices were distinct and understandable. Frankenstein’s monster had so much sadness and despair in his voice. Just heart-wrenching.
I loved this story when I first read it. Glad to have an audio version that I can listen to while crafting.

As good as you remember

The only thing that needs to be commented on is Dan Stevens performance. It is brilliant and serves the story and writing beautifully.

A new outlook on Frankenstein’s creature

I recently read this classic and was surprised to discover that Frankenstein himself appeared more monstrous than the creature he brought to life. The tale highlights how we tend to judge based on appearance, leaving the abandoned creature longing for companionship and guidance. The story evoked strong emotions with well-developed characters, and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
