Seventeen-year-old Lisa Jacobs is determined to solve her father's gruesome murder. But before she can investigate in her own small town, she is forced to spend the summer with her Uncle Clayton, the owner of Grand Hallow - a massive funeral and mortuary operation the size of a small city. Her move to Grand Hallow only deepens the mystery as she begins to suspect the strange and chilling occurrences there are linked to her father's death. With the help of her acid-tongued best friend and deadbeat brother, Lisa must unravel the secrets of Grand Hallow - before it's too late.

Lisa Jacobs Mystery: Haunting at Grand Hallows

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It had had a lot going for it. It had mystery, thriller, horror, comedy, and supernatural aspects that played very well with each other. I think this should fall into the young adult category but as an old adult I still really enjoyed it. I wouldn't call this a gory book by any means but I can see how some would, but for a horror story taking place in a morgue there could have been way more. If you grew up loving books like Nancy Drew or Hardy Boys this book will make you relive those days. Pays homage to them perfectly in a newer tone.
Character development was solid and you really get to know each person before the story really launches. Tina hands down is the star of the show even though she only has a supporting role. As you get to learn more about Lisa’s family and friends you come to really like them all, except for her deadbeat brother, and I assume everyone would be happy to hear more stories about them.
Alex did a fantastic job. Her voices were spot on for each character and I especially loved to hear her voice the twins and do her deep south accent for Ned. Her voice for the twins reminded me of Sheri Moon Zombie as Baby Firefly from Ho1Kc witch really added to the creep out factor. She did a really top notch job and I would be willing to listen to other books solely based on her being the narrator.

Nancy Drew Visits Hell House

I liked this book because it was a fun horror story. The main character reminded me of Nancy Drew but harboring a dirty secret. Without giving much away, those who like all types of horror might find this story fun. It's like listening to that longer version of a short story but explains the mysteries.

Welcome to Grand Hallow

I was super excited to win an Audible copy of In the Graveyard Antemortem by Stephen Stromp.

I devoured this book. I knew this was going to be one of those books I’d love right from the start. Definitely one that will be a re-listen in the future. Stephen Stromp has the perfect amount of creepy paranormal atmospheric world building to give you that eerie feeling and enough mystery/suspense to keep you guessing. Alex Ford did an amazing performance bringing life and emotions to Lisa and the rest of the quirky cast of characters. I would love to venture back to Grand Hallow and revisit Lisa on another adventure.

Meh

I received this from Audiobook Boom and the author in exchange for an honest review.

Not sure how to rate or review this one. The first half of the book wasn't bad, sort of like an episode of Scooby-Doo, with the required, "Darn those meddling kids!" I wasn't too far off the mark, but then the second half started. This half felt like a mish-mash of ideas the author threw together to make the book longer.

The other thing about this book was that the characters didn't feel "real". The main character was too old and experienced for her 17 years. The other characters just felt shallow and one-dimensional. Additionally, there wasn't much feeling of horror-ness. The narrator read like she was reading a textbook.

In the Graveyard Antemortem

This was as close to YA horror as I have ever seen. It was graphic in ways that make it less YA and more horror in my opinion. I really enjoyed most of it with the only exception being some of the dialog and a bit of the mystery aspect. Overall, the story was fun and the narration was solid. When the story got dark I loved it. And there were some nice and dark parts to this book.

This book was given to me for free at my request for my voluntary and unbiased review.

Creepy Moments but Very Disconnected

Would you try another book from Stephen Stromp and/or Alex Ford?

Probably not. Basically, the book had very cool concepts and some very creepy imagery but nothing really that captivated me to continue to listen.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

While listening to the book I felt that it was almost like a weekly teen horror drama on basic cable. In an effort to avoid spoilers, I will say that the story showed very interesting promise but felt very disconnected. It is like the author had some really cool concepts but no real connecting narrative elements other than "tragedy strikes and now the main character must live at a spooky graveyard/ city".

How could the performance have been better?

The narrator had issues performing male voices and because of that, I kept being pulled out of the drama while listening.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

I would watch to see some of the imagery but not be too invested. I would not go to the theater to see the movie.

Any additional comments?

Be advised that I received a copy of this audio book in exchange for a review.

Interesting

I enjoyed listening to this audio book. I think the narrator did a really good job with the different voices. The story was interesting and it had enough twists and turns to keep me guessing.

Fun vacation from reality!

If you could sum up In the Graveyard Antemortem in three words, what would they be?

Gory, entertaining, imaginative.

What about Alex Ford’s performance did you like?

Great job voicing a wide range of characters.

If you could rename In the Graveyard Antemortem, what would you call it?

Grand Hallow

Any additional comments?

The story was unrealistic and highly entertaining. Go into this one willing to suspend reality for a bit, and definitely make sure you've got a strong stomach - it's got plenty of gore! Reminiscent of a B-horror movie that teens will flock to in the summer, it's a great way to completely escape the realities of the world around you for a few hours. ***This book was given to me for free at my request and I provided this voluntary review.***
