Publisher's Summary

The powerful debut novel from Alan Brennert, Moloka’i tells the story of Rachel Kalama, a seven-year-old Hawaiian girl who contracts leprosy and is quarantined on the island of Moloka’i during the 1890s. Separated from her family and forced to grow up in the leper colony of Kalaupapa, Rachel experiences intense isolation. But she remains strong, finding moments of joy, and even love. Rich in Hawaiian history, this novel proves itself a stellar piece of historical fiction.

What the critics say

“Compellingly original … Brennert’s compassion makes Rachel a memorable character, and his smooth storytelling vividly brings early twentieth-century Hawaii to life.” ( Publishers Weekly)

Historical fiction at its best

What a spectacular audiobook. Rachel is a wonderful and deeply complex character. Through her, we learn about Hawaiian history and the little known story of Kalaupapa. I enjoyed the narrator's performance tremendously, and the mix of Hawaiian and Japanese words used at the appropriate moments greatly enriched the experience. 5 stars all around.

Brilliant

My ancestors were born on Molokai. Listening to this audio book and the narration, I felt I was there in-person and could see what was described, the people, the places, the feelings. Beautiful story, as I even had my grandpa mentioned as one of the characters in the book who was alive and real. Thank you so much Alan Brennert for writing this sad and troubling time for my people with such heart and care for their souls.

One annoying thing....

The story and performance was good, however as someone who likes to switch between the book and audiobook I found this frustrating. The audiobook chapters are not the same as the book, I don't really understand why but it made something that should be seemless unnecessarily annoying.

Gripping and Breathtaking Story

Emotional and engaging story told with incredibly rich detail. I hung on every word and the narrator's tone and voice brought the story to life. This incredible story may be fictional, however, the historical details are well researched. Written in such vivid detail, I felt I was there.

Fabulous Read!

This story captured my heart! The characters came to life and became my friends. I wanted to protect them and, at times, felt so helpless.
