Publisher's Summary

What happens when the haggling is done and the shops are closed? When the quest has been given, the steeds saddled, and the adventurers are off to their next encounter? They keep the world running, the food cooked, and the horses shoed, yet what adventurer has ever spared a thought or concern for the Non-Player Characters? In the town of Maplebark, four such NPCs settle in for a night of actively ignoring the adventurers drinking in the tavern when things go quickly and fatally awry. Once the dust settles, these four find themselves faced with an impossible choice: pretend to be adventurers undertaking a task of near-certain death or see their town and loved ones destroyed. Armed only with salvaged equipment, second-hand knowledge, and a secret that could get them killed, it will take all manner of miracles if they hope to pull off their charade. And even if they succeed, the deadliest part of their journey may well be what awaits them at its end.

Excellent

Loved the story. it is well written and humourous with wit that any table top roleplayer will chuckle over. Roger Wayne is the perfect narrator for this series.

Starts off a little clunky, but really picks!!

The beginning threw me and I didn't think I would like it. but the story gains constant momentum throughout and has a pretty cool dynamic the gets introduced about 3/4 of the way through! I'm starting the second book now.

You're in a game

This was a hoot. This brought to mind several other reads: "Redshirts," by John Scalzi, "Quag Keep," by Andre Norton, "Ender's Game," by Orson Scott Card, and "Monsters! Monsters!," a supplement to "Tunnels and Trolls," from Flying Buffalo Games.

The title itself is a spoiler: in a universe fundamentally linked to a game, characters considered unimportant to the gamers find themselves entangled in an adventure.

I'm interested in seeing how this turns out, but I'll probably wait a bit.

After all, it's only a game.

Right?

Must read for D&D fans!

I first purchased this audiobook randomly a while ago and it's quickly become my favorite book series!
Drew Hayes knows how to write D&D fantasy and Roger Wayne's narration is absolutely fantastic!

very entertaining!

I'm a forensic police officer who used to play a great deal of RPG's so admittedly a 'bit' of a need. this is the first book of its kind for me and it was delightful. well developed characters and an interesting setup for a story. if your reading this then you owe it to yourself to pick this up and give it a listen. I very much doubt you will be sorry.

heartwarming relationships

I particularly enjoyed how the main characters where supportive of one another. Add a sprinkle of fun subversion of expectation and an excellent pacing, and you've got this entertaining gem with a big heart..

Short but gold! A must buy for fans of the genre.

Great book, lots of funny, gripping and emotional moments packed in this short adventure.

If you like the premise this book holds: "Npcs" being the main character instead of players, I think you'll love the path the author seems to have chosen for this series. I've been looking for something like this for years now.

Easily makes it within the top 10 greatest books I've had the pleasure of reading( I know listing but that sounds weird ).

The book only scratches the surface of the universe created by the author and I look forward to discovering more of it's wonder in the next book.
