Publisher's Summary

Richard Sharpe avoids the tyrannical Sergeant Obadiah Hakeswill and endeavours to rescue a British officer from under the nose of the Tippoo of Mysore.

But in fleeing Hakeswill, Sharpe enters the exotic and dangerous world of the Tippoo. An adventure that will require all of his wits just to stay alive, let alone save the British army from catastrophe.

Soldier, hero, rogue - Sharpe is the man you always want on your side. Born in poverty, he joined the army to escape jail and climbed the ranks by sheer brutal courage. He knows no other family than the regiment of the 95th Rifles whose green jacket he proudly wears.

Great book and better narration!

I’ve read the series from beginning to end at least two times and this is one of my favourites. Rupert Farley is incredible and brings to life the characters flawlessly with a performance that has topped every other audible book I’ve listened to so far. Don’t hesitate to try this.

Great start to a pretty damn good series.

Story: It's a prequel to the best Napoleonic series out there. It tells the Origins of the series protagonist as a private in the English army, fighting to unify India under England. It all starts with an undercover mission that'll have you on the edge of your seat.

Narrator: At first I wasn't sure of the narrator, but his range of voices and accents won me over by the second chapter. The only criticism I have of him is his narrator voice is quieter than the Character voices, meaning I have to play it louder than normal to hear everything properly as I drive.

Overall: Corwell had refined his writing style by this point and makes everything come to life perfectly. The first one he wrote was Sharps Eagle and I don't believe it was his best work. Everyone should start here.
The casting of the narrator can make or break a good audio book. Everyone involved nailed it with this one.

The Greatest Story ever written

This is the most entertaining novel I have ever listen too. I say this after listening to every novel Bernard Cornwell wrote. The narration done by Rupert Farley is incredible. Amazing !! And this story about Richard Sharpe , when he was just a private. This story , and the narration by Rupert Farley is the greatest Amazon Audio book I’ve listen too. I have listen to 250 books in the last three years, which includes every Sharpe novel. Believe me , absolutely incredible . 😀

Great Story and Excellent Narration

An excellent continuation of Sharpe's adventures in India. Bernard Cornwell's story telling coupled with Rupert's narration is really captivating. I especially love the narrator's use of different voices and inflection for each character (and the voices are consistent in each book). Very entertaining, and very enjoyable. I cant wait to listen to the rest of the Sharpe series.
