Publisher's Summary

International best seller

One of the most anticipated books of 2017: The Millions, CBC, Chatelaine, Globe and Mail, Maclean's

From the author of The Bear, the enthralling story of two women separated by millennia, but linked by an epic journey that will transform them both.

Forty thousand years in the past, the last family of Neanderthals roams the earth. After a crushingly hard winter, their numbers are low, but Girl, the oldest daughter, is just coming of age and her family is determined to travel to the annual meeting place and find her a mate.

But the unforgiving landscape takes its toll, and Girl is left alone to care for Runt, a foundling of unknown origin. As Girl and Runt face the coming winter storms, Girl realizes she has one final chance to save her people, even if it means sacrificing part of herself.

In the modern day, archaeologist Rosamund Gale works well into her pregnancy, racing to excavate newly found Neanderthal artifacts before her baby comes. Linked across the ages by the shared experience of early motherhood, both stories examine the often taboo corners of women's lives.

Haunting, suspenseful, and profoundly moving, The Last Neanderthal asks us to reconsider all we think we know about what it means to be human.

Needs a better ending

I loved this book... what there was of it anyways. I was totally hooked on the neanderthal character. The book ended way to early though and left way too many questions unanswered. I still rated this pretty good because it was enjoyable.. but I'm rather disappointed in the ending.

So good

I very rarely write a review but I felt as though I needed to for this one. This is not the type of book I would typically read but I’m so glad I did. It was a wonderful story, very well read, with an engaging plot
I recommend it

The lovers.

Thought the last Neanderthal was a article about a real archeological find and was pleasantly surprised by the fictional story telling by the author. I do like a dry factual article from time to time concerning our distant cousins but I thought the story was well written and held my interest throughout the novel. The person reading the story was very good. Throughly loved it. Good read.

I loved this story

Great writing and performance, really enjoyed the double streams. CC, you painted the story so vividly, everything was so real and surreal. I will listen to this creative thoughtful story again.

One of the best

It’s much different than I usually choose. Creative story line with learning all in one. Made me enjoy some history. A great book.

Such a good story…

This book is full of love and heartache - of trials in the natural world, of hardship beyond measure. I was moved to the point of tears watching these two women navigate their lives thousands of years apart in human history.

A must read

This story is different from everything I usually read but was so worth it! I adored the parallel in between today's humans and Neanderthal's way. Loved it.
