Publisher's Summary

Roland Deschain and his ka-tet are bearing southeast through the forests of Mid-World, the almost timeless landscape that seems to stretch from the wreckage of civility that defined Roland's youth to the crimson chaos that seems the future's only promise. Followers of Stephen King's epic series know Roland well, or as well as this enigmatic hero can be known. They also know the companions who have been drawn to his quest for the Dark Tower: Eddie Dean and his wife, Susannah; Jake Chambers, the boy who has come twice through the doorway of death into Roland's world; and Oy, the Billy Bumbler.

In this long-awaited fifth novel in the saga, their path takes them to the outskirts of Calla Bryn Sturgis, a tranquil valley community of farmers and ranchers on Mid-World's borderlands. Beyond the town, the rocky ground rises toward the hulking darkness of Thunderclap, the source of a terrible affliction that is slowly stealing the community's soul. One of the town's residents is Pere Callahan, a ruined priest who, like Susannah, Eddie and Jake, passed through one of the portals that lead both into and out of Roland's world.

As Father Callahan tells the ka-tet the astonishing story of what happened following his shamed departure from Maine in 1977, his connection to the Dark Tower becomes clear, as does the danger facing a single red rose in a vacant lot off Second Avenue in midtown Manhattan. For Calla Bryn Sturgis, danger gathers in the east like a storm cloud. The Wolves of Thunderclap and their unspeakable depredation are coming. To resist them is to risk all, but these are odds the gunslingers are used to, and they can give the Calla folken both courage and cunning. Their guns, however, will not be enough.

One step closer to the dark tower...

I loved Frank Mueller and wondered why he wasn’t doing the fifth book but King explains why in the afterword. George Guidall took a little getting use to but he definitely grew on me. I loved his Rosalita accent.

Between some chapters there was a long pause. Sometimes I thought the book stopped playing. Figure this has to do with how the book is laid out but it was odd! Didn’t take away from the story at all.

Wasn't sure I'd enjoy this but it was very good.

Stephen King is the master, and has been for many years. I started with him when Carrie came out, and now have almost his whole library on audiobook--partly because I ADORE Frank Muller's voice, and partly because I always wanted to read the Dark Tower series, but lost my sight in the early 90s.
Now, notice I said Frank Muller, but the narrator is George Guidall, as Frank had been injured in 2001, and died in 2008, so he was unable to complete The Dark tower series. I really wasn't sure if I'd be able to switch midstream from one beloved narrator to another. However, George delivered, and I've now finished the series.

performance pauses

loved the book and enjoyed the audio. The only problem I had was the pauses between chapters. Compared to many other audio books I listened to I find the pauses in this one were too long. I kept thinking my device had froze

I really warmed up to the new narrator in this one. I really enjoyed the story of the Calla and liked the accents.

Beware of the Wolves!

If you enjoyed Wizard & Glass for its Cowboy-ish tones then you will love Wolves of the Calla. The newer narrator is a bit different to get used but his voice does deliver! If you wanted additional story to the Dark Tower, you can read Salems Lot before this book, but it is not necessary (I didn't). I enjoyed this book thoroughly and was happy with the overaching story and how it played out. If you've come this far, then beware of the wolves that are to come!

Fantastic, even transitioning back to the first narrator.

This book was top notch. I’ve been listening to the dark tower novels for a year now and this is a great addition to the series.
The events in this book get your heart racing if you loved the multi-world travels that happened before.
This gets you really good if you like potential alternate reality scenarios.

My only negative is that it’s hard to discern the different old folk with this particular narrator. And that is all.

Also
I don’t think I’m at all ready to be done the series, but we are nearing the end.

With that being said, I know there is some content in addition the the seven books. Tales that are told around the time just before the start or around the start of the book. I’ll look forward to them, and you should too :) #Audible1

Jarring for listeners of the previous books

The ratings speak for themselves concerning the narrative, but I personally found the new narrator very off putting when it came to the OG ka-tet. Roland and Jake are done well enough, but he fails to recapture the essence of Eddie's fast and witty New Yorker style speech, or Susan's southern twang as effectively as the old narrator. As a result some of their trademark worlds-apart banter falls flat, and at times I couldn't even tell them apart right away.
