Publisher's Summary

Orphaned, penniless, and determined to keep her family together, Elise St. John hastily arranges to marry the half-Apache Missouri landowner Blade Lonewolf, who has agreed to adopt her younger sister. It is a marriage in name only, intended to make the unconventional adoption acceptable.

But as they try to form a family - a Baltimore debutante who can’t even cook and an outcast Indian whose heart is closed to love - they are beset by needs and desires they never anticipated. Living with Blade becomes a sweet torment. His vitality awakens Elise in a desire that’s too dangerous to acknowledge - but just as impossible to ignore. For Blade, true love becomes a tantalizing promise held just out of reach. It is only when they are in greatest danger of losing everything that they find the fulfillment of their most splendid dreams.

A so-so read.

The story was decent even if it was a little hard to believe. Our main character was a privileged woman who suddenly blooms in the west in a three room home and a new husband. She can suddenly cook, do laundry, see to the livestock, plant flowers, etc. without even a grumble and or tiredness and then focus her evenings on the sexual escapades with her husband. I could have done with a whole lot less of the sexual acts and more with the realistic parts of prairie life and the conflicts facing the family. Would I recommend this book….probably not.

🌻Great book, overall!🌻

Although this book isn’t my usual, cup of tea, I’m glad I chose it. It’s set in Missouri, not long after the Civil War. There is some prejudice, in this small town, but there are more good, hardworking people.

The Hero is half Apache and half white and the Heroine comes from A world of privilege but discovers that love and family is what makes you richer then all the money, in the world.

Good plot, great characters and worthy message, don’t skip this listen!

An old favorite listened to many times.

I keep coming back to this story over the years to relisten many tiimes. I love historical Western romances and it is an one area which has a dearth in selection. What I like about this story is the slow, almost unintentional development of love of the MC's. No insta-love here! It also highlights that for all the shortcomings of our social services of today, what it must have been like before such services existed. Women had few employment opportunities of significant remuneration and lived in such a repressed society. But family was the most important aspect of life (as it remains today) and I can feel the desperation of the FMC to keep her family together in spite of limited resources. In addition, the narration is adequately done so when I need a fix of this genre I will probably continue to return in the future.

Lovely book…

Why yes, I have enjoyed this program, thank you. The narrator loses one star for mispronouncing the word “mischievous” several times.
