Publisher's Summary

Introducing a remarkable new character from number-one New York Times best-selling writer David Baldacci: Atlee Pine, an FBI agent with special skills assigned to the remote wilds of the southwestern United States who must confront a new threat...and an old nightmare.

Eeny, meeny, miny, moe. Catch a tiger by its toe.

It's seared into Atlee Pine's memory: the kidnapper's chilling rhyme as he chose between six-year-old Atlee and her twin sister, Mercy. Mercy was taken. Atlee was spared.

She never saw Mercy again.

Three decades after that terrifying night, Atlee Pine works for the FBI. She's the lone agent assigned to the Shattered Rock, Arizona resident agency, which is responsible for protecting the Grand Canyon.

So when one of the Grand Canyon's mules is found stabbed to death at the bottom of the canyon - and its rider missing - Pine is called in to investigate. It soon seems clear the lost tourist had something more clandestine than sightseeing in mind. But just as Pine begins to put together clues pointing to a terrifying plot, she's abruptly called off the case.

If she disobeys direct orders by continuing to search for the missing man, it will mean the end of her career. But unless Pine keeps working the case and discovers the truth, it could spell the very end of democracy in America as we know it....

Good story can't say the same for the reader

Another typical Baldacci story. The detail was incredible. The story begins to draw you in. However, the reader's performance ultimately leads us (my wife & I) to abandon this book. We just could not listen & follow with this particular reader. It is unfortunate as we both look forward to listening to new (to us) & different Baldacci stories.

Pretty good listen

The story is 99% about finding a reason for a dead donkey. Interesting scenario given the current state of the world. But I can't figure out why the storyline about Atlee Pine's sister's disappearance has any relevance in the novel. It was the definition a red herring.

Book good

Narrators were terrible, especially the woman. Hard to listen to her. The male was almost as bad

Good read

loved the storyline and the characters. a little bit far reaching that they could come up against so much opposition and come out fairly unscathed. But the hero's should win!

Fabulous Followup. Ready for More

Solid storyline with easy to follow characters. Mostly believable with minor character appearances from nowhere.

Love the new characters

I love the 2 women lead characters in this new series. The plot is a little over the top, but it's very entertaining. The narrators are good, too. Looking forward to the next one in the series.
