In 1994, Nelson Mandela became the first president of democratic South Africa. Five years later, he stood down. In that time, he and his government wrought the most extraordinary transformation, turning a nation riven by centuries of colonialism and apartheid into a fully functioning democracy in which all South Africa’s citizens, black and white, were equal before the law. Dare Not Linger is the story of Mandela’s presidency, drawing heavily on the memoir he began to write as he prepared to finish his term as president, but was unable to finish

Gandhi's nonviolent struggles against racism, violence, and colonialism in South Africa and India had brought him to such a level of notoriety and adulation that when asked to write an autobiography midway through his career, he took it as an opportunity to explain himself. He feared the enthusiasm for his ideas tended to exceed a deeper understanding of his quest for truth rooted in devotion to God. His attempts to get closer to this divine power led him to seek purity through simple living, dietary practices, celibacy, and a life without violence.

In his own words, the heavyweight champion of the world pulls no punches as he chronicles the battles he faced in and out of the ring in this fascinating memoir edited by Nobel Prize-winning novelist, Toni Morrison. Growing up in the South, surrounded by racial bigotry and discrimination, Ali fought not just for a living, but also for respect and rewards far more precious than money or glory. He was named Sportsman of the Century by Sports Illustrated and the BBC.

It was in the nature of Belgium’s withdrawal from Africa that power was essentially handed over to the first in line to receive it. Very little of the careful preparation that characterized the British withdrawal from Africa was evident in Congo. As it turned out, the first in line to take power was a tall, stern-featured ideologue by the name of Patrice Lumumba. This audiobook looks at one of the most important African leaders of the 20th century.

In this lyrical, unsentimental, and compelling memoir, the son of a Black African father and a White American mother searches for a workable meaning to his life as a Black American. It begins in New York, where Barack Obama learns that his father - a figure he knows more as a myth than as a man - has been killed in a car accident. This sudden death inspires an emotional odyssey - first to a small town in Kansas, from which he retraces the migration of his mother’s family to Hawaii, and then to Kenya, where he meets the African side of his family.

Why we think it’s a great listen: You thought he was a stodgy scientist with funny hair, but Isaacson and Hermann reveal an eloquent, intense, and selfless human being who not only shaped science with his theories, but politics and world events in the 20th century as well. Based on the newly released personal letters of Albert Einstein, Walter Isaacson explores how an imaginative, impertinent patent clerk became the mind reader of the creator of the cosmos.

From Andre Agassi, one of the most beloved athletes in history and one of the most gifted men ever to step onto a tennis court, a beautiful, haunting autobiography. Agassi brings a near-photographic memory to every pivotal match and every relationship. Never before has the inner game of tennis and the outer game of fame been so precisely limned. In clear, taut prose, Agassi evokes his loyal brother, his wise coach, his gentle trainer, all the people who help him regain his balance and find love at last with Stefanie Graf.

In this luminous memoir, a true American icon looks back on his celebrated life and career. His body of work is arguably the most morally significant in cinematic history, and the power and influence of that work are indicative of the character of the man behind the many storied roles. Sidney Poitier here explores these elements of character and personal values to take his own measure: as a man, as a husband and a father, and as an actor.

In July 2004, Barack Obama electrified the Democratic National Convention with an address that spoke to Americans across the political spectrum. Now, in The Audacity of Hope, Senator Obama calls for a different brand of politics: a politics for those weary of bitter partisanship and alienated by the "endless clash of armies" we see in Congress and on the campaign trail; a politics rooted in the faith, inclusiveness, and nobility of spirit at the heart of "our improbable experiment in democracy".

For all the literature about Adolf Hitler, there have been just four seminal biographies; this is the fifth, a landmark work that sheds important new light on Hitler himself. Drawing on previously unseen papers and a wealth of recent scholarly research, Volker Ullrich reveals the man behind the public persona, from Hitler's childhood, to his failures as a young man in Vienna, to his experiences during the First World War, to his rise as a far-right party leader.

Like his competitor Thomas Edison, Tesla was one of America's first celebrity scientists, enjoying the company of New York high society and dazzling the likes of Mark Twain with his electrical demonstrations. An astute self-promoter and gifted showman, he cultivated a public image of the eccentric genius.

This memoir written by writer, orator, and former slave Frederick Douglass describes, in gripping detail, the circumstances of his upbringing, his brutal treatment at the hands of slave-owners, and his narrow escape from Maryland to freedom. Written in 1845, this narrative is one of the most famous works of American literature and provided fuel for the abolitionist movement that began in the early 19th century.

Ce que les critiques en disent
"Narrator Michael Boatman has a gentle but insistent voice that suggests a certain grace and is well suited for the memoir of this worldwide symbol of persistence and justice. Boatman’s authentic pronunciation of South African tribes and other words also lends great credibility to his reading. He narrates at an unhurried pace and lingers on certain words throughout the book in order to let us inhale Mandela’s meanings." (AudioFile)

An intriguing, captivating life of Mandela
At first I was unsure whether I would finish or even enjoy listening to this ebook, read by someone other than Mandela but it was amazing from start to end. After the first few chapters I forgot it wasn't Mandela himself speaking, that speaks volumes to the amazing job done by Michael Boatman. I honestly listened to this book every chance I got. Between washroom breaks, during lunch, via commute and while completing chores. I will definitely listen to this book again. It has so many details and content that I often visualize the surroundings being explained.
I recommend listening this book!!

A story of patience, understanding and it's value
A must listen. A must read, of course but the narration really brings the words to life. It's appropriate for anyone regardless of location, economic privellage, etc as there are times we aren't sure if the right thing we are doing is worth it(for a myriad of reasons).
His honest portrayal of his relationships throughout his times as a freedom Fighter show two sides of the coin that is typically not thought of for characters like Mandela.

Captivating!
As I read in another review, you very quickly forget this is not Mandela telling his story in his own voice. Every spare moment I could find was devoted to listening to his story as I could not put it down. I felt as though I was reading a story but understood this was teaching me about the history of South Africa and of course its leader, Mandela. Definitely one of my favorite books ever!

Outstanding Autobiography
We all can take lessons from the life of Nelson Mandela! His is a story of determination, persistence, consistence, commitment, truth, honesty, faith and hope. He recognized and strove for the greater cause which was a price he and his family paid dearly for. He unselfishly spent the days of his life to better the lives of future generations of all races, cultures and creeds in his country. His outstanding leadership, professionalism and civility in difficult situations assisted him in the seemingly impossible task of changing the mindset of the privileged population. To achieve the goals of the African National Congress (ANC) this party had to link arms with all other minorities groups in spite of their differences to advance the cause for freedom. Unity, ultimately meant putting all pride, hurt, wounds and prejudices behind. I was continually in awe of the fact that to achieve their goal of freedom and unity, they had to win their enemies over. It might have been easier to exterminate them BUT that was not their vision! The vision was unity and equal rights for all!
Mandela was team player! His team had to lead and live it by example to expect it of others! Wow. Nelson Madela's persistence and courage in working with apartheid ideas and groups, his respect and recognition of others in his party and his desire to allow others to lead when he might have had the glory is commendable. Awesome man! Powerful lessons!
