Description
When a worker goes missing from a North Sea gas platform, there seem to be just two possible explanations - it was a tragic accident or a suicide. It does not take Smith and his detectives long, however, to discover that James Bell led a double life back onshore in Kings Lake, a life complicated enough to make him at least one dangerous enemy. Before the case can be unraveled, Smith must get a new team working together; Waters and Murray are still there, but one of Wilson's men is transferred to him, and the female detective constable from Longmarsh poses some unexpected problems for her new sergeant. Together they begin to investigate the links between the companies and the people that bring ashore the oil and gas, and they also find themselves caught up in the seamier side of life that exists beneath Lake's everyday comings and goings. Jo Evison begins to delve more deeply into the story of the Andretti murders, and Smith himself has to face the fact that he might no longer be considered fit for duty.

Love this series

found narrator not the best
enjoyed story but found narrator hard to listen to. all characters sounded like the same person. difficult to finish

Wonderful series
I have now listened to the first three books in the series and they are getting better all along. Someone likened this series to another favourite - Gamache by Louis Penny - and I agreed. The narration is also fantastic. I am looking forward to the next one.

Really Enjoyable
The characters, the performance, the narrative is all terrific. The story though complicated never seems convoluted. There are many laughs and much pathos.

Very good book

Nicely Balanced Serial Procedural
By this third installment in the 'DC Smith' series, author Peter Grainger is evidently much more comfortable exploring the sardonic Detective Sergeant's personal life, romantic interests, and anxiety about the effects of aging on his ability to do the job.
Don't worry.. the PG-13 sensibilities of the storytelling and Grainger's signature wry wit continue.. but this offering with a dual mystery/characterization mandate is an improved effort relative to the first two episodes. Grainger isn't perfect at it, but the extra focusses add to the enjoyability of the mystery rather than detracting from it.
Gildart Jackson is again spectacular - exhibiting an unmatched understanding of the author's intention. If you are given the option of taking the audiobook or a text (paper or eBook) version of this book - choose this one. Jackson's professional diction/enunciation, comfortable timbre & cadence, spot-on voice-acting, and pitch-perfect tone improves it.
Altogether, 'Luck And Judgement' merits 9 stars out of 10. It is the best book in the series (so far).. and - as a 'Plus' selection - absolutely warrants your time (even if they asked for a Credit, it would be worth it).
