Description

A new team of Reckoners must infiltrate the flying city of Lux to take down the Epic Lifeforce in this audio-exclusive novel from Brandon Sanderson, the best-selling author of the "Stormlight Archive" and "Mistborn" series, and co-author Steven Michael Bohls.

When the great red star Calamity appeared in the sky, some believed the end had come. They were right.

Calamity created the Epics: humans with incredible powers they didn't deserve.

They could have saved mankind. They could have lifted us into harmony and prosperity. Instead they burned. They slaughtered. They conquered. And then they ruled.

Jax has learned all of this the hard way. Orphaned at an early age, he's spent most of his childhood training to be a Reckoner - determined to find the Epics' weaknesses, unlock their secrets, and protect those of us who are still left.

But now, the mysterious High Epic Lifeforce has arrived with his flying city, Lux, to plunder what's left of Texas. So Jax and his ragtag team - the few who remain of the once-mighty Texas Reckoners - must take their battle to this floating fortress of riches - and defeat the invincible.

To avenge what has been lost. And rise anew.

A good story idea made up of patched up plot holes

Disappointed. I never thought I'd write an even SLIGHTLY negative review of anything by Brandon Sanderson [except maybe the White Sand (audio)book adaptations of the graphic novels, but those were taken out of his hands and are not really his fault]. Maybe it is the second author for the Texas Reckoners book(s)? I dunno.

Unfortunately, the writing in this book is just not up to regular Sanderson quality.

The overarching story is good, and contributes to the Reckoner "universe" in a clear way, but repeatedly--all the way through--the writing seems to be awkwardly inserting information and what seem like unnecessary explanations. They are done very bluntly and seem like retroactive edits to the text, like it is trying to answer questions about important things that weren't clear enough later in the text. It isn't good foreshadowing. It is more like there were tons of plot holes that had to be fixed in later revisions because the first draft wasn't very good.

It is not fair to say the foreshadowing is more obvious because of the youth target audience and therefore the writing is more simplistic than my expectations from his Cosmere works -- the Alcatraz and Skyward series' are both for a younger audience and much better written. The difference with this book is especially noticeable and jarring when reading this first Texas Reckoners book right after rereading the original Reckoners books.

The pacing is also sort of jagged, with a series of events happening staccato, one after another, without the smooth plot arcs I am used to reading in Sanderson works. His writing is usually so well planned book after book, story within story, with well balanced plot arcs spanning the book and series. That is not how this book reads.

Side note: I love audiobooks and using great narrators repeatedly for Sanderson's work, but the male lead, Jax, is given the exact same voice as David, the male lead in the other Reckoner books. It was confusing at first, as I expected David was being under cover or something. It will be very awkward if Jax and David meet in later books, and the writing of their speech, with distinct tone and cadence would have to be done very very well for it to not be confusing. (I am mildly concerned about a similar possibility with two male leads Kramer does in the Cosmere books *cough cough* but those characters are very different, and I know the writing is really good there and think it will be okay.) The male lead in this story, Jax, doesn't have a unique or significantly distinct personality from David, who is the male lead in the first four Reckoners books of the main series. And since Prof is a character cross-over between them, and HIS voice is distinctly his in both series', it is noticeable.

Not Sanderson's best

I generally enjoy everything Brandon Sanderson writes, and I enjoyed the reckoners series. But there is a principal in fiction called the "suspension of disbelief". It's what lets you enjoy things you know can't happen and accept that of course Vader can choke a guy with his mind; that's just how the star wars universe works. This novel broke that principal multiple times for me. I was jarred out of listening to it by the thought "that's not what would happen".

As an author Brandon can choose how things in his story interact however he wants and can make people make dumb choices and have pure dumb luck pull them out of it.... But I know he can do better. He does better in his other books foreshadowing how things will turn out, or making characters pay for what logically was a mistake (and giving them an emotional or ignorance reason to make that mistake.) That didn't happen here, and those details hurt the overall story.

41 and I loved it

Easy to follow, fun, and entertaining. Fantastic audio performance! It's exactly what I am looking for when selecting the next audio book. I was sad when it ended and now I must wait for the next book. The characters are brought to life by the excellent narration and performance. Thank you all!

Very good book, excellent narrator

The narrator/performer is absolutely fabulous. He does different voices for all characters, of course, but even different narrator voices when the book shifts perspectives. He is truly great.

The book is very good, but admittedly, not excellent, due to some odd plot points that I don't think make perfect sense.

Loved it!

Good story, enjoyed it very much. Not sure how much was Sanderson and how much was Bohls, but the story was every bit as good as the first trilogy. Definitely recommend it for those who enjoyed the other reckoners books.

A waste of a credit!

A mumbling ten year old could write a book with a more sensible plot. They were drawing from from a setting so rich they could have made an interesting, exciting and possibly humourous story. this is the opposite. Boring cliche after cliche.
I only got through this because i was trapped in a car.

Another good Reconner story

Jax is orphaned by an epic and ends up joining the Reconners. They go up against a epic named Life force that can heal himself and those around him and head a floating city

Is you enjoyed the other Reconner stories you will enjoy this one.

A Fun, Action-Packed Story

The longer I listened to this book, the more I realized how much I missed the series. Great for new fans and perfect for older fans, LUX has all the charisma, personality, and action that the original series had.

The story follows a new group of Reckoners as they take on the Epics who live in a floating city. The book takes its time developing the characters and their personalities, making each one real and someone to cheer for.

Jax has a great story arc. From a normal kid to a full fledged warrior, I loved his personality and the dialogues he had with others. This book truly shone when Jax interacted with the main villain, who was no laughing matter.

The action and plot were tight and thrilling. The dialogue was great and I loved the twists. This is a great audiobook for anyone who loves superheroes. It certainly helps that the narrator sounds remarkably like Chris Evans. The story ends on a cliffhanger, which means I am ready for more!

On Par

I am ceaselessly amazing at how he can write consistently entertaining material, given the volume of his ongoing library.

MacLeod Andrews is consistently incredible as well. His mastery of his art is evident with each character that he brings to life.
