Publisher's Summary

Some nights are life-changing. No one knows that quite like the Riva siblings. Fame, fortune, family drama— Malibu Rising has it all. Follow along as this captivating story by Taylor Jenkins Reid sweeps you away to one stunning summer night in 1983, and the decades of heartbreak before it.

Taylor Jenkins Reid is a darling of the literary world, with multiple can’t-miss sagas and unique storylines soaring up best seller lists. Her best-known works include The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, Carrie Soto Is Back and Daisy Jones & The Six, which was adapted into a popular Amazon Prime miniseries starring Riley Keough.

In Malibu Rising, Jenkins Reid unravels the riveting story of four siblings—Nina, talented surfer and supermodel; not quite twin brothers Jay, a championship surfer, and Hud, a celebrated sports photographer; and their baby sister, Kit—and Mick Riva, the famous crooner dad who abandoned them. In this audiobook, listeners will hear the Riva family’s saga, struggles and secrets come to life through impeccable narration. Narrator and actor Julia Whelan expertly gives a voice to all five characters and more. Her inflection and delivery will transport all who listen to that unforgettable night in Malibu and the twists and turns leading up to it.

What the critics say

“Reid has once again crafted a fast-paced, engaging novel that smoothly transports readers between decades and story lines.” (The Washington Post)

"If summer could somehow fit into a book, then you’d find it in Malibu Rising.” (Oprah Daily)

“Reid’s descriptions of Malibu are so evocative that readers will swear they feel the sea breeze on their faces or the grit of the sand between their toes.... A compulsively readable story about the bonds between family members and the power of breaking free.” (Kirkus Reviews)

Not a favorite

Loved the narrator but the story was all over the place, too many characters and too juvenile of a story line for me.

Another winner

Love the way Jenkins Reid creates such complex and 3 dimensional characters who make you feel what they feel. It’s always hard to leave them behind when I reach the end of the story.

Took some time

This story took some time to sink it's teeth into me. No complaints on the Narrator or even the structure or setting of the story. The imagery was also enjoyable, but I think I wasn't all that invested in the active culture, which is almost like another character itself.

So in the beginning I often found myself going to other books because these characters and what they were experiencing just wasn't all that exciting or compelling.

By the time I made it to part two it felt like the climb was over and I could now coast downwards towards the conclusion and it felt much more enticing in its pacing.

Anyone that enjoys the culture and or universe created here, that retro americana escapism then this will be a very quick read for you. If like me, you've started and are unsure, stick with it... it's not something you'll regret.

Great story about a family and their love and loss

I really enjoyed this book, though I related to the main character Nina quite a bit, this book had a lot of heart and emotion. The characters were all well developed and went through their own character arch’s through the course of the story. It was a story that takes place over multiple timelines and through various lenses. My favourite novel from this author so far, and I really enjoyed Evelyn Hugo; but this story was so much more emotional and heartfelt to me. The performance was great, the narrator did a great job of defining the characters and overall 5/5

Underwhelming

Definitely worth a listen if you're looking for something you don't have to think about or get excited about. It had a good storyline with potential but it fell flat for me. I kept waiting for the big surprising plot twist that never really happened. There were some good moments that kept me interested but I had to push through. Not for me.
