Publisher's Summary

Enter the dark, magical world of the House of Night series by bestselling authors P.C. Cast and Kristin Cast, a world very much like our own, except here vampyres have always existed.

One minute, sixteen-year-old Zoey Redbird is a normal teenager dealing with everyday high school stress: her cute boyfriend Heath, the school's star quarterback who suddenly seems more interested in partying than playing ball; her nosy frenemy Kayla, who's way too concerned with how things are going with Heath; her uber-tough geometry test tomorrow.

The next, she's Marked as a fledgling vampyre, forcing her to leave her ordinary life behind and join the House of Night, a boarding school where she will train to become an adult vampyre. That is, if she makes it through the Change—and not all of those who are Marked do.

It sucks to begin a new life, especially away from her friends, and on top of that, Zoey is no average fledgling. She has been chosen as special by the vampyre Goddess, Nyx. Zoey discovers she has amazing powers, but along with her powers come bloodlust and an unfortunate ability to Imprint with Heath, who just doesn't know how to take "no" for an answer. To add to her stress, she is not the only fledgling at the House of Night with special powers: when she discovers that the leader of the Dark Daughters, the school's most elite group, is misusing her Goddess-given gifts, Zoey must look deep within herself for the courage to embrace her destiny—with a little help from her new vampyre friends.

What happened?

I love the HoN books so much, but I couldn't even finish listening to this. The narrator speaks like a root to me and has weird pauses constantly. There was no depth in the performance at all and it ruined it. I'm pretty disappointed.

The reader

I’m a big fan of these books. Can never find the time to read the books though so I wanted to try it this way! It’s great! I can cook and clean my house while listening to a good book!

Not my favorite voice acting

A great story, but the reader let it down. Not much personality in her voice. Sounded stunted, like she was separately reading one word at a time, robotic sounding. It was disappointing.

annoying voice performance

Reading/listening to this book for the first time (adult), the writing seems immature. I am not finished the book yet, and I am hoping it gets less immature as the story progresses. The voice performance is the most annoying voice I've ever heard. I am unsure if the word "ginormic" is actually written within the text of this book, however, the voice performer repeatedly states "ginormic" and I could be wrong, but I tend to think "ginormic" is not a proper English term. The high pitched, pretentious tone of the voice performer is off-putting for the listener.

Dated and a little insensitive.

Decided to give this book a reread and OH DEAR reading it as an adult made me realize how terrible it is. It’s full of slut shaming and it’s a bit misogynistic. For a book about a vampire society run by women it sure typecasts them and pits them against each other. A bad example for younger readers and impossible to ignore for the ones that grew up.

Pretty good

It took a bit of getting used to, but I like the different take on vampires. What I really don’t like is how the narrator reads, and especially the voices she does. I don’t think Stevie Ray is a 70 yr old woman, or Grandma Redbird is 120 yrs old, but they sound like they are. Annoying reading overall.

maybe I'm too old for this series now

I loved HON when I was a teen and wanted to see how it held up now that I'm an old coot. This go around I often felt like Zoey was very whiny, could be the way the voice actor read the part though. I didn't end up liking the sound of the actor's voice so perhaps that's where my discontent comes from
