Publisher's Summary

New York Times best seller

An unexpected offer threatens the bond between Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi as the two Jedi navigate a dangerous new planet and an uncertain future in the first canon Star Wars novel to take place before the events of Star Wars: The Phantom Menace.

A Jedi must be a fearless warrior, a guardian of justice, and a scholar in the ways of the Force. But perhaps a Jedi’s most essential duty is to pass on what they have learned. Master Yoda trained Dooku; Dooku trained Qui-Gon Jinn; and now, Qui-Gon has a Padawan of his own. But while Qui-Gon has faced all manner of threats and danger as a Jedi, nothing has ever scared him like the thought of failing his apprentice.

Obi-Wan Kenobi has deep respect for his Master but struggles to understand him. Why must Qui-Gon so often disregard the laws that bind the Jedi? Why is Qui-Gon drawn to ancient Jedi prophecies instead of more practical concerns? And why wasn’t Obi-Wan told that Qui-Gon is considering an invitation to join the Jedi Council - knowing it would mean the end of their partnership? The simple answer scares him: Obi-Wan has failed his Master.

When Jedi Rael Averross, another former student of Dooku, requests their assistance with a political dispute, Jinn and Kenobi travel to the royal court of Pijal for what may be their final mission together. What should be a simple assignment quickly becomes clouded by deceit and by visions of violent disaster that take hold in Qui-Gon’s mind.

As Qui-Gon’s faith in prophecy grows, Obi-Wan’s faith in him is tested - just as a threat surfaces that will demand that Master and apprentice come together as never before or be divided forever.

What the critics say

“Gray's other Star Wars novels - Lost Stars, Bloodline and Leia: Princess of Alderaan - are among the best you can read, but Master & Apprentice stands out as her strongest.” (CNET)

“Thankfully, the novel absolutely delivers on the goods and the wait has been worth it.” (Cinelinx)

“Gray has not only written her finest novel to date in my opinion, but certainly one of the finest canon novels as well, maybe the finest.” (TheForce.Net)

Feels like fan service, but it's so much more!

This book seems like it was writen by a fan. It ties in many little side points in over movies and shows that most wouldn't automatically jump to asking for, but it really works. The story in this is as a Star Wars story should be, a little political and justicy, with action and adventure and of course some comedy in between. I'll always enjoy info about Obi Wan and Qui Gon's stories. the reading and sound effects are excellent too! The music helps immerse yourself in the listening too. all in all I'd rate this a solid 9/10, but out of 5 it's perfect for me.

The Force will be with you, always.

Qui-Gon being my favorite Jedi was the reason I purchased this, the depth of he and Obi-Wan's relationship that is revealed through this adventure made it an instant favourite. The narrator's Ewan McGregor and Liam Neeson impressions do the characters justice as well and I can't wait to listen to this again someday. Happy listening, and may the Force be with you.

Vital Reading For Canon SW Fans

This book is now one of my favorites. Excellent story, excellent characterization of both beloved and brand-new cast members, plenty of references (and impact) to SW Canon ... and in the audiobook, Jonathan Davis outdoes himself, in my opinion. There were plenty of scenes where I could have sworn Liam Neeson or Ewan McGregor must have been hired to do their character's lines, both due to Davis' near-perfect delivery and Gray's incredibly accurate characterization. My one and only complaint would be that the ending was a bit rushed or loose ... it left me wanting far more detail around how the story ended or unfolded for several of the major characters.

Always entertaining but storyline left me wanting

The production value of any of these books makes any of them worth a listen. However, it seems like they could have done so much more given the characters involved. Some interesting behavior for one of the New Jedi introduced keeps it intriguing.

Great Character Story

I thought this audiobook was wonderful! In this story we get to see more of Qui Gon and his relationship with Obi-Wan during their early years together. There are many little references that may make fans happy to hear. The new characters were also great in my opinion, and the ending was a great surprise to me.
This story may not be for everyone, but I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Great story to begin the journey of Episode 1.

Loved it. It explained a lot of the relationship between Qui Gon, and Obi Wan, and foreshadowed their relationship with Anakin.

Good story, performance was great

The book was slow to start, but picked up and became a good story. The performance was great and the narrator did a good job making the voices match the movies. Overall a good book.
