Mathilde lebt mit ihrer Mutter in einer kleinen Berliner Wohnung in der Nähe des Bahnhofs Friedrichstraße. Als sie aus finanziellen Gründen den Jurastudenten Hugo Großmann als Untermieter aufnehmen, sieht sie endlich ihre Chance gekommen, durch Heirat aus den ärmlichen Verhältnissen auszubrechen. Von ihrem eigenen Ehrgeiz angetrieben, triezt sie den verträumten Hugo durch das juristische Examen und verschafft ihm das Bürgermeisteramt in einer nahe gelegenen Kleinstadt. Doch das Eheglück ist nur von kurzer Dauer: Als Hugo plötzlich erkrankt und stirbt, ist Mathilde wieder auf sich selbst zurückgeworfen.
