Publisher's Summary

Because it’s a novel, the truth can be told. Because it’s the truth, you’ll never forget it....

Gene Wentz's Men in Green Faces is the classic novel of Vietnam that inspired a generation of SEALs. Here is the story of a good soldier trained to be part of an elite team of warriors - and of the killing grounds where he was forever changed.

Gene Michaels carries an M-60, 800 rounds, and a Bible. The ultimate SEAL, he also carries a murderous grudge against a bloodthirsty colonel who was once one of their own. To bring him in, Michaels and his men will go behind the lines, where they’ll take on 5,000 NVA in the fight of their lives. In this stunning novel, former SEAL Gene Wentz brings to life what it was like to be a SEAL in Vietnam, running an endless tour of top-secret, death-defying operations deep in enemy territory. From the camaraderie to the harrowing recons, from brutal interrogations to incredible, toe-to-toe firefights, here are America’s most feared warriors as you’ve never seen them before.

What the critics say

"Full of ambushes and firefights.… From page one I knew I wanted to be a SEAL. The more I read, the more I wanted to see if I could measure up." (Mark Owen, number-one New York Times best-selling author of No Easy Day)

awesome. simply awesome.

Firstly the narrator is great. This is important to me. A bad narrator ruins otherwise great books, and can make ok books good.
The story told is simply awesome. Its completely devoid of all the bureaucratic crap. No politics. I thought the American participation in the war was simply opposing communism and it didn't change my mind or try to. But it changed my view of the men who fought that war. It gave me much deeper understanding of them and made me feel for them, as well as the people of Vietnam in that horrible period. It made me understand why, once the men were there, they fought so hard. It's not a story against communism or against the NV. Its a story of the very young men who went, and fought and tried their best to make the world a better place.
There's so much violence and aggression in this story that many will miss the subtlety. But it's there.
It kept me riveted to it the whole time. I just couldn't stop listening.

loved every chapter

like the description said non stop ambushes and battles. Their battle prep and orders are spot on, at times it almost feels like I'm in the O group receiving a FRAGO.

Some times there are very "cowboyish hoorah" moments, but hell this is Vietnam and it's d bunch of dudes operating in ungodly elements and an enormous enemy presence.

..in the end, Intel is never solid and split second hunches tend to save your ass, but the 1100 rounds of 60 ammo might help as well.

Good but not great

Having listened to dozens of audiobooks on war (Vietnam, WW1/2, Korean, Afghanistan and Iraq) I’d rate this a 3 of out 5. The first half of the book is a little dull and I only found myself getting more absorbed into the characters closer to the end. Good, not great.
