A Jeep has crashed into the only tree for miles around. A woman is slumped over the wheel. Dead? No, nothing is what it seems. The woman is Michaela Fenton, an army veteran turned FBI agent trying to find her twin brother, who might be mixed up with some dangerous people. It's 1949. When war veteran Aloysius Archer is released from Carderock Prison, he is sent to Poca City on parole with a short list of dos and a much longer list of don'ts: do report regularly to his parole officer, don't go to bars, certainly don't drink alcohol, do get a job - and don't ever associate with loose women. The small town quickly proves more complicated and dangerous than Archer's years serving in the war or his time in jail.

Publisher's Summary
FBI Agent Atlee Pine’s harrowing search for her long-lost sister Mercy reaches a boiling point in this breakneck thriller from number one New York Times best-selling author David Baldacci.
For her entire life, FBI agent Atlee Pine has been searching for her twin sister, Mercy, who was abducted at the age of six and never seen again. Mercy’s disappearance left behind a damaged family that later shattered beyond repair when Atlee’s parents inexplicably abandoned her.
Now, after a perilous investigation that nearly proved fatal, Atlee has finally discovered not only the reason behind her parents’ abandonment and Mercy’s kidnapping, but also the most promising breakthrough yet: proof that Mercy survived her abduction and then escaped her captors many years ago.
Though Atlee is tantalizingly close to her family at last, the final leg of her long road to Mercy will be the most treacherous yet. Mercy left at least one dead body behind before fleeing her captors years before. Atlee has no idea if her sister is still alive, and if so, how she has been surviving all this time. When the truth is finally revealed, Atlee Pine will face the greatest danger yet, and it may well cost her everything.

Entertaining but annoying
Intriguing plot line with gripping and suspenseful twists tempered by occasionally distracting and sometimes awkward dialogue. Irritatingly frequent detailed and lengthy descriptions of appearance and dress of characters interrupt the pace. Embarrassing and implausible Buckley subplot, particularly the cage fight, and the unconvincing confession of Dolores/Desiree Atkins undermine the otherwise engaging story.

A Huge Disappointment!
David Baldacci is one of my favorite authors. I anxiously waited for the audiobook release of Mercy. I love the series, but this book was a colossal disappointment. Did Baldacci write this book, or did he have a ghostwriter? I was annoyed by the round-and-round storyline. It was as though situations would pop up with no rhyme or reason. There were so many subplots. It seemed Baldacci was attempting to bring all the loose ends together so he could move on to something else. Without a doubt, a feeble ending—I mean, really? Walking into the sunset—what a letdown.

Atlee Pine is BACK
Oh how I missed this heroine. And the voices of Brittany and Kyf, like old friends coming to tell me
a story after Covid kept us apart.
The story jumps in right where it left off in the last book. I dreaded finding out what happened to Mercy after escaping the woods, but Baldacci handles this so well. You will be engrossed, angry, tearful. And mostly sad to think this may be the last of Atlee Pine and Carol Blum.
