Short for Brandon

Too short, but otherwise good. Used to longer stories with more character development with Brandon Sanderson books. Not bad as an interlude though.

Enjoyable Side Encounter

This short Brandon Sanderson offering is unnecessary to follow the overall story arc in the 'Reckoners' series. It essentially relates a fight between David and the Reckoners (freedom-fighters) against an Epic (superpowered Tyrant) who can multiply himself.. set in the newly-freed city of Newcago. The battle is well-conceived, well-described, paced beautifully, and a fun sample of what Sanderson offers.

The performance by MacLeod Andrews is likewise typical for what you can expect should you decide to follow this excellent comicbook-like fantasy series. His timbre and cadence are impressively professional. Furthermore, Andrews's tone fits the young protagonist in a rollercoaster-ride scenario perfectly. Less fortunately, his voice-acting is inferior and his rate of reading is too slow (I recommend playback at 1.15X for this one).

This 8.5/10 star audiobook is worth a listen.
• If you're already reading the series, you could decide to skip this one and not miss anything, but it's a quality diversion for an hour
• If, like me, you enjoy Sanderson's writing, spend the money on it (*Note: it's cheaper than a Credit)
• If you're curious about the Reckoners, this short recording has standalone merit (you could read it without being familiar with the series). The book is exemplary for what Audible Studios is offering: high-quality sound, capable performance, outstanding writing. You could legitimately treat 'Mitosis' as a sample to help you decide if the series is worth following

You can Skip It

This novella’s story was okay. It adds nothing to the overall story of the second book except the background of a villain, “Mitosis,” who is referenced in the second book. In this novella there is a funny scene where Abraham eats a hot dog for the first time – that’s probably the highlight.

The narration was great, pulling up the overall star rating.

Great Novella!

I am typically weary of novellas because I am not a fan of authors making these novellas necessary to read and purchase to understand the story. I like when they are just additions to the story to give avid fans of the story more to read if they choose to. That is exactly what Mitosis was.

Mitosis wasn't a necessary read (well, listen since I had it as an audiobook), but it did give us just a little bit of an insight as to what David and the Reckoners are doing in the interim between the end of Steelheart and presumably the beginning of Firefight (but I have yet to read that one). I liked that we got to see more of David and his irresponsible heroism; it wasn't necessary for me to read this one to know that about him though, which is probably what I liked the most.

My favourite part of this was the idea that Newcago is changing for the better: more people are trusting that the Reckoners will be able to protect them from any and all Epics. But I do think that will bite them in the ass in Firefight.

Overall: 3.5/5 stars. This one just made me all the more excited to read Firefight! I should really go pick up a copy... I would suggest reading or listening to this one -- it is a good refresher to the story before you read Firefight, but it isn't necessary to read it in my opinion. It doesn't lead into what the big bad will be in the next one or give you a "dream" or "prophecy" that is necessary to understand the stories like some other books I could mention...

it was good

Not sure I love these little snippets. Seems like a chapter taken from a larger book and its lacking the story and context of the novel it should be in.

Not worth the credit

You should skip to Firefight this is a waste of credit. It is a prologue to fire fight.

Ripoff

A credit for 45-60 minutes? With zero added to the story. I didn’t look at the length before buying it. Lost all respect for the author after that. Pure money grab.
