Publisher's Summary

#1 New York Times bestselling author Nora Roberts surpasses herself once again, with a novel as sweeping and extraordinary as the Montana sky itself....

When Jack Mercy died, he left behind a ranch worth nearly twenty million dollars. Now his three daughters - each born of a different mother, and each unknown by the others - are gathered to hear the reading of the will. But the women are shocked to learn that before any of them can inherit, they must live together on the ranch for one year.

For Tess, a screenwriter who just wants to collect her cash and get back to Hollywood, it’s a nightmare. For Lily, on the run from her abusive ex-husband, it’s a refuge. And for Willa - who grew up on the ranch - it’s an intrusion into her rightful home.

They are sisters...and strangers. Now they face a challenge: to put their bitterness aside and live like a family. To protect each other from danger - and unite against an enemy who threatens to destroy them all...

What the critics say

"Roberts balances the tension and sometimes gruesome action with three romances, crackling dialogue and a snappy infusion of humor." ( Publishers Weekly)
"All six of the major characters are wonderfully written, with just the right touch of genuineness, warmth, and distinctiveness to make readers emotionally invest in their stories." ( Library Journal)

Sexist, iffy narrator, violence

I have become a fan of Nora Roberts' books during COVID-19 seclusion - I enjoy the cozy atmosphere, the easy romance and how you know the good guys will always win. This had all those factors, but I found myself rolling my eyes over some of the He-man attitudes of the love interests - I think even cowboys can be enlightened and I don't find the thought of being shaken by man or picked up and thrown caveman style very sexy. The narrator was ok in some parts and off in others - some strange whiny tones for the older voices sounded cartoonish and some of the men sounded just like the women. Lastly, while I expect her books to have some mystery/thriller/nail bite elements ( I can take some violence or knowledge of it) the description of the violence in this one was very disturbing for me. A lot more detail that left me wanting to fast forward.
Overall there was a good mystery angle, but this was not my favourite.

Not as good as I remembered.

I remember really liking Nora Roberts and this story in particular. Now, I find Ben's confidence irritating and scary. The way he and Nate tell their women how things are going to be... I hate it. And I really liked Nate too. I'm going to finish this. I WILL finish this. But I hope not every relationship is like that in Nora Roberts' other books.

Good story, poor narration

Good story but I could barely tell the difference between most of the characters voices and the male voices didn't come across as male at all.

Poorly researched and laughably predictable...

Well, all I can say is I’m appalled that this book even got published, and if all her other novels are as irritating and factually inaccurate as “Montana Skies” ...how did this woman ever become a famed writer?? Are people nuts?! Nora Roberts, you need to do your research before you endeavour to write a story about ranching and horses. It is abundantly clear you know nothing about horses, or you would never have written about a yearling being “put through its paces” and galloping around a pen with not ONE (bad enough...) but TWO people on its back. Absolutely ridiculous! A one year old horse cannot be ridden... their skeletal structure, vertebrae and muscle mass are not developed enough to take the weight of a person on their back, let alone two!! Heck, even at 3 years old, it’s pushing it!! It’s tantamount to strapping weight onto the back of a human toddler! For heaven’s sake, DO THE RESEARCH!!

As for the romance side and love interests, the foregone conclusion of “which sister was going to end up with which guy” and the in-your-face predictability of the trite and cliched “steamy sex scenes” left me either infuriated or cringing! You most certainly don’t need a crystal ball to calculate the outcome...

I know one thing... I won’t be bothering with another Nora Roberts novel. My raised blood pressure from plain annoyance cautioned me that one was quite enough...

Fairly predictable

Just an average listen, at points I was finding myself wishing it was over already cause I could predict what was likely going to happen, which I was correct. Wouldn’t recommend as a great read.
