Publisher's Summary

From New York Times best-selling author Anthony Horowitz comes a new novel featuring ex-editor hero Susan Ryeland, set to solve another murder mystery

Farlingaye Hall is a beautiful hotel in Suffolk on the east coast of England. Unfortunately, it is also the site of the brutal murder of Frank Parris, a retired advertising executive. Stefan Codrescu, a Romanian maintenance man, is arrested after police discover blood spatter on his clothes and bed linen. He is found guilty and sentenced to eight years in prison. It appears to be an open-and-shut case, but there is more to it than meets the eye.

Alan Conway, the late author of the fictional Magpie Murders, knew Frank Parris and once visited Farlingaye Hall. Also, the third book in Conway’s detective series, Atticus Pund Takes the Cake, was based on the hotel. Cecily Treherne, the daughter of Farlingaye Hall’s owner, has read the book and believes the proof of Stefan’s innocence can be found in its pages.

But now...Cecily Treherne has disappeared. So Conway’s former editor, Susan Ryeland, leaves her own hotel in Crete and travels to Suffolk to investigate the murder and Treherne’s disappearance.

Masterfully intriguing, brilliantly clever and relentlessly suspenseful, Moonflower Murders is a deviously dark take on vintage English crime fiction in which the reader becomes the detective.

Spoilers in review

I love the idea of a book inside a book. The Atticus Punt mystery is always way more pleasant than the Susan Reyland one. One thing that stands out in both Magpie Murders and this one is the sheer negative portrayal of LGBT characters. I would have dismissed it, had it not happened in both books. Somehow the books treat sexual minorities differently. Also, I should have warmed up to Susan, but there is something about her that puts me off. Earlier, I had thought I didn't like the narrator's voice, but it's not her. It's the character. Nonetheless, I will recommend this book. It's a good story.

Enjoyable

Love both stories but for me it concentrated on 2 kind of nastier characters a little too much (in the Atticus Pund storyline) once that was moved on I was happy

Another Great Who Dun It

Oh Susan, getting herself into trouble again but what a fantastic listen this was. I like how we got to know the real life story and then we dive into the novel by Atticus Pund.

The evolution of the story and Susan's journey was well received and looking forward to the rest of the series. Worth the credit/listen if you enjoy other novels by Anthony Horowitz.

Interesting ending but a bit dragged out

I like the concept of a book in a book, and preferred the Atticus Punt plot. The ending has an interesting twist, I didn’t see it coming but it did feel dragged out and slightly overdramatized. And I personally could not empathize with Susan - her approach felt very distant and cold but perhaps that was on purpose. Overall, an entertaining listen but just a tad long.

Overly long

Overly long - many passages aimed at, I suppose, character development added nothing to the overall story. Best part was the book within the book. Male reader excellent - female reader inconsistent - sometimes creating new voice for a character, but not for others. Ending completely implausible

Very, very good!

I loved it. The story is complicated enough to require attention, with interesting, colourful characters. Both narrators are spot on (I love Leslie Manville in books and on the screen).

Praise worthy

Having read or listened to Book 1 & 2 I can’t believe how quickly the hours flew by. Thoroughly enjoyable romp through two murder mysteries that are well written and impressively performed. I look forward to discovering more of this authors stories.

Unique

A very different approach to a mystery novel. I really enjoyed the interweaving of the stories.

Main story 1-imbedded story 0

The main book is very good and is narrated very well but I could not stand the imbedded book.
