More than two centuries after World War III poisoned the planet, the final bastion of humanity lives on massive airships circling the globe in search of a habitable area to call home. Aging and outdated, most of the ships plummeted back to Earth long ago. The only thing keeping the two surviving lifeboats in the sky are Hell Divers - men and women who risk their lives by skydiving to the surface to scavenge for parts the ships desperately need.

War heroes aren't usually called out of semi-retirement and sent to the far reaches of the galaxy for a routine investigation. So when Colonel Carl Butler answers the call from an old and powerful friend, he knows it's something big - and he's not being told the whole story. A high councilor's son has gone MIA out of Cappa Base, the space station orbiting a battle-ravaged planet. The young lieutenant had been wounded and evacuated - but there's no record of him having ever arrived at hospital command.

It was just a random mutation - one of a billion that happen in viruses every day. But this one was different. It exploded out of Somalia and spread across the oceans before anybody thought to look up from their cell phones to see what was going on. The infected breathed the virus into the air around them, spreading it through the cities faster than anyone thought possible. Hospitals were overwhelmed. Police lines crumbled. Quarantine sites disintegrated. Cities started to collapse.

Histoire
For dinosaurs, it was a big rock. For humans: Coronal Mass Ejection (CME). When the Earth is hit by the greatest CME in recorded history (several times larger than the Carrington Event of 1859), the combined societies of the planet's most developed nations struggle to adapt to a life thrust back into the Dark Ages. In the United States, the military scrambles to speed the nation's recovery on multiple fronts including putting down riots, establishing relief camps, delivering medical aid, and bringing communication and travel back on line. Just as a real foothold is established in retaking the skies (utilizing existing commercial aircraft supplemented by military resources and ground control systems), a mysterious virus takes hold of the population, spreading globally over the very flight routes that the survivors fought so hard to rebuild.

From the Audie-nominated narrator of The Martian. In eleven years' time, a million members of an alien race will arrive at Earth. Years before they enter orbit, their approach will be announced by the flare of a thousand flames in the sky, their ships' huge engines burning hard to slow them from the vast speeds needed to cross interstellar space. These foreboding lights will shine in our night sky like new stars, getting ever brighter until they outshine even the sun, casting ominous shadows and banishing the night until they suddenly blink out.

We were fighting on the wrong side of a war we couldn't win. And that was the good news. The Ruhar hit us on Columbus Day. There we were, innocently drifting along the cosmos on our little blue marble, like the native Americans in 1492. Over the horizon come ships of a technologically advanced, aggressive culture, and BAM! There go the good old days, when humans only got killed by each other. So, Columbus Day. It fits. When the morning sky twinkled again, this time with Kristang starships jumping in to hammer the Ruhar, we thought we were saved.

Description
In this prequel to the apocalyptic horror series, an overnight gig turns into a nightmare when zombies start coming for blood.
After a long day on the job, house painter Gus Berry is looking forward to relaxing and spending some time with his girlfriend before returning to work the next day. But none of that is going to happen.
Gus’s coworker Benny has found them a painting gig at the local Mollymart East, and it has to be done by morning. If Gus and his crew can complete the work on time, it could mean huge business with a major grocery store chain.
But as Gus and his fellow painters are about to discover, the much-anticipated zombie apocalypse doesn’t start with a bang; it starts on a Monday. And barricading themselves inside a megastore isn’t the end—it’s only the beginning . . .

Worthy Prequel. Read it Fourth.
If you are a fan of the series, this book takes us back to when Zombies first showed up in all their full-speed, homicidal glory. They have inhuman ferocity and strength initially, gradually turning into the slower, vicious mindless cannibals we all know and love. Blackmore writes fantastically vivid, descriptive, and horrifying scenes. Then he adds flat-out funny dialogue. Best line: "Her boobs were perked up like two puppies smelling barbecue". Describing Zombie brains as "Head-Cheese and Bad Jam" is gloriously repulsive, but somehow humorous. It's clear Blackmore understands how silly this premise really is, and doesn’t take himself TOO seriously. Gus, an obese house-painter, makes you realistically ask the question "What Would ^I^ do if this crazy sh*t happened?" It's not 'Shaun of the Dead' parody, but attains a nice balance of scary and ludicrous.
Later books in the series shift from Zombie threats to Undead Animal threats to Human threats. This one is a good refresher...straight-up Zombie menace. It breaks up the plot progression in the 'Mountain Man' series nicely.
R.C. Bray is...well...R.C. Bray
This is a 9.5 out of 10 episode from one of the best collections in the genre.

R.C Brays talented narration couldn't save this
R.C Bray is one of my favourite narrators and podium one of my favourite publishers of sci-fi audiobooks.
Unfortunately, even Bray's incredible talent could not save the terrible writing of this book. The dull opening was meant to build tension and suspense before shocking you with the introduction of the 'bad guys' (not to give away the story too much). But instead it went on in unnecessary and poorly executed detail, failing to bring the characters introduced, or the world to life in the process.
The worst offender, is that the dialogue heavy parts of the book, which are many, did not translate well into spoken narration. Instead of the dialogue flowing effortlessly, it was clunky and amateurish, almost every single line being followed by 'said character x'. Even when vaguely more imaginative attempts at clarifying who the dialogue belonged to were attempted, it failed to help the flow of conversation between characters, despite being boosted by Bray's exceptional performance.
Perhaps it reads better than it sounds, but as an audiobook, it was definitely not great.

Another classic from Blackmore. I’m more than excited to listen to the second prequel.
I enjoyed the glimpse Blackmore offered on Guses personality before the fall. This allowed me to better understand Gus before the alcoholism took over, as we notice in the earlier books.

This was well worth the money, exciting but funny at times. I have gone through 1 to 5 so far and enjoyed them all, each one is a little better than its predecessor. Also love the fact that is based in Canada’s east coast, love it there.

worth the purchase
it's definitely something to go back to midway through the series. It isn't necessarily going to ruin anything ifyou listen to it last. Seems like the very beginning and Gus and Tammy are the only names that are referenced in prior novels.
