About this listen
He wants to remember. She needs to forget. . . . Memento meets Sharp Objects in a gripping psychological thriller from the New York Times bestselling author of Something in the Water and The Disappearing Act.
“Twisty . . . highly imaginative . . . deliciously provocative.”—The Washington Post
Who is Mr. Nobody?
When a man is found on a British beach, drifting in and out of consciousness, with no identification and unable to speak, interest in him is sparked immediately. From the hospital staff who find themselves inexplicably drawn to him, to international medical experts who are baffled by him, to the national press who call him Mr. Nobody, everyone wants answers. Who is this man? And what happened to him?
Some memories are best forgotten.
Neuropsychiatrist Dr. Emma Lewis is asked to assess the patient in a small town deep in the English countryside. This is her field of expertise, this is the chance she’s been waiting for, and this case could make her name known across the world. But therein lies the danger. Emma left this same town fourteen years ago and has taken great pains to cover all traces of her past since then.
Places aren't haunted . . . people are.
But now something—or someone—is calling her back. And the more time she spends with her patient, the more alarmed she becomes that he knows the one thing about her that nobody is supposed to know.
What the critics say
“Steadman once again brilliantly paces the action from the very first scene. . . . As in all good thrillers, lights unexpectedly snap out, a creepy house is hidden down a tree-woven lane, and long-buried secrets emerge. . . . A spellbinding thriller perfect for those dark and stormy nights.”—Kirkus Reviews
“The elaborate plot, filled with seemingly impossible twists, drives to a suspenseful conclusion.”—Publishers Weekly
“Twisty . . . a highly imaginative tale tinged with Hitchcockian tension and kinetic pacing . . . Steadman’s deliciously provocative novel dishes up enough questions to fill the entire space devoted to this review. She cleverly cloaks them in more mysteries, turns and shocking revelations.... Mr. Nobody and Emma Lewis, though invented, seem so real. Mr. Nobody turns out to be somebody, and his unmasking makes for a delightfully compelling story.—The Washington Post

Good but not great
Interesting characters and great narration. The medical research and elements were well done. There was a lot of build up for certain plot lines that didn’t up going anywhere, it got slow in the middle, and the suspense at the end was enjoyable however Matthew’s background was a bit implausible, and felt slightly rushed. Overall I enjoyed it but not as much as previous novels by Steadman.

Wonderful story beautifully read
Steadman never disappoints. There's just something special about the author reading her own book to you.

A miss for this author
I wanted to love this book but this story just fell flat. There were interesting scientific parts as others have mentioned but the "big reveals" in this book just didn't deliver. I loved other books by this author (Family game, Disappearing Act) but I really had to force myself through this one. I'd suggest skipping.

An alright book
While I thoroughly enjoyed the scientific aspects of this book, I found in other respects it fell flat. the style and points of view were enjoyable, but unfortunately the plot outside of the medical aspects weren't all that interesting and the characters held my interest on and off. the narration at times also sounded a bit weary if that makes sense? Like Ms Steadman herself was a bit tired of telling the story.

Fantastic read!
Way to go Catherine! Loved your first book but loved this one even more. Creative storyline, lots of suspense, I was only too sad for it to end!
Please write more books soon!

good, but "Something in the water" is better
I think that Catherine Steadman is brilliant. I loved "something in the water" and I was so looking forward to this book as well. It didn't grab me like the other one did initially, but it definitely had its plot twists and turns. I think there was an overall lack of suspense that I was hoping for.
I will definitely look forward to her next one though
