Publisher's Summary

“Pulpy, peppery and sinister, served up in a comic deadpan…This scorpion-tailed little thriller leaves a response, and a sting, you will remember.” –NEW YORK TIMES

“The wittiest and most fun murder party you’ve ever been invited to.” –MARIE CLAIRE

WINNER OF THE LA TIMES BOOK PRIZE FOR MYSTERY/THRILLER
FINALIST FOR THE 2019 WOMEN’S PRIZE

A short, darkly funny, hand grenade of a novel about a Nigerian woman whose younger sister has a very inconvenient habit of killing her boyfriends

“Femi makes three, you know. Three and they label you a serial killer.”

Korede is bitter. How could she not be? Her sister, Ayoola, is many things: the favorite child, the beautiful one, possibly sociopathic. And now Ayoola’s third boyfriend in a row is dead.

Korede’s practicality is the sisters’ saving grace. She knows the best solutions for cleaning blood, the trunk of her car is big enough for a body, and she keeps Ayoola from posting pictures of her dinner to Instagram when she should be mourning her “missing” boyfriend. Not that she gets any credit.

Korede has long been in love with a kind, handsome doctor at the hospital where she works. She dreams of the day when he will realize that she’s exactly what he needs. But when he asks Korede for Ayoola’s phone number, she must reckon with what her sister has become and how far she’s willing to go to protect her.

Sharp as nails and full of deadpan wit, Oyinkan Braithwaite’s deliciously deadly debut is as fun as it is frightening.

What the critics say

"Braithwaite's debut is written in quick, economical chapters that brilliantly render the setting.... A darkly, darkly funny novel.... It strips away the romanticism of the complicated sisterly relationship but perfectly illustrates its complicated contradictions." (Booklist)

"Who is more dangerous? A femme fatale murderess or the quiet, plain woman who cleans up her messes? In My Sister, the Serial Killer, Oyinkan Braithwaite answers that question with an original and compelling debut. I never knew what was going to happen, but found myself pulling for both sisters, as I relished the creepiness and humor of this modern noir." (Helen Ellis, New York Times best-selling author of American Housewife)

"Disturbing, sly and delicious, Braithwaite's novel compels us to consider the limits of loyalty and the insidious weight of silence." (Ayobami Adebayo, author of Stay with Me)

Riveting but Maddening

I loved the writing style, the premise and the characters. I also found the setting and the world captivating, as was the complexity of the sisters' relationship. But oh, did I want to scream at the narrator much more than once. She is at once completely self-aware and intelligent but so emotionally entwined with her sociopathic sister that it is challenging to stay with her. The self-destruction is utterly crazy-making. I would recommend it for the writing and the world that Braithwaite creates but try not to scream as you listen.

I need a tome 2

I binged it. Soooo interesting. I wish we were explained why she did all she did. I hope there is a second one coming to shed some light.

WOW

It’s almost 6am and I should be asleep but I can’t stop listening to this. This book was written and performed excellently, surpassed all my expectations especially as I haven’t read a book in almost 4 years.

Witty and Jawdropping

I thoroughly enjoyed this book! It was funny and entertained me discussing sisterhood, colourism and jealousy - all during a thriller! I also loved that there was a historical aspect to it. My only criticism is that I wanted more - more on the knife, more on their father, JUST MORE!

Not good storyline

I searched book titles that were supposed to be funny and this one came up on the top 11 list…it wasn’t funny at all. The narrator did a wonderful performance but the story line was lacklustre and no real climax…would not recommend.

good story but felt incomplete

This was a really interesting story but I felt like it jumped around a bit and parts of the story were left unanswered.

Nice

Interesting story. Very beginner friendly and easy to get into. As a Nigerian I found the narrator’s fake nigerian accent a tad bit annoying

slight spoiler

This story was really intriguing but frustrating. The writing is so good that you want more out of it. These sisters draw you in, and you want to know more about Ayoola’s "why"; but I also recognize that the story is from her sister’s view and maybe she never tells her. Even though I wanted more (did I say it enough times? lol), for me it was a great story about faith and family duty.
