Story
It’s natural to want the one you can’t have. And for as long as I could remember, I’d secretly wanted my brother’s best friend, Jace. He was six years older and always treated me like the sister he never had. Fast forward a decade. We were all in our 20s now. Jace had moved in with my brother, Nathan, and me to help us make ends meet after our parents died. It was just the three of us - an odd family dynamic. Living under our roof, Jace was as bossy and protective as ever. But he certainly didn’t look at me like a sister anymore. That was what made things so complicated.

Story
Finding a good roommate through a classified ad isn’t as easy as it sounds. I was starting to lose hope. Until a knock at my door came, and God answered my prayers. Except...uh...wrong prayer, God. I’d definitely requested the big guy find me a drop-dead gorgeous man on more than one occasion...just not as my roommate. Declan Tate talked me into interviewing him anyway. While he was amusing and charismatic, I wouldn’t have been comfortable living with a man, so I regretfully declined. Then, cupcakes showed up at my door.

It was the summer of my life. I’d met the guy of my dreams. Unfortunately, he was the son of my uppity employer - and very much off-limits. But Gavin was a rebel. He knew his mother would disown him if she found out about us; in his eyes, we just had to be careful. He never treated me as his mother did - like hired help. Instead, Gavin put me on a pedestal and loved me harder than I’d ever been loved in my life.

It started out like any normal day. Then the fender bender happened. The guy I collided with drove an expensive car and was drop-dead gorgeous. Too bad he was also a total jerk. We argued over whose fault it was and any other thing that came out of his condescending mouth. Eventually, the police came and we went our separate ways. The insurance companies would have to figure things out. I had a job interview to get to anyway - one I was excited about. Though that excitement changed to disappointment the moment the person interviewing me walked in. The guy from the accident.

I’d never forgotten him - a man I’d yet to meet. Griffin Quinn was my childhood pen pal, the British boy who couldn’t have been more different from me. Over the years, through hundreds of letters, we became best friends, sharing our deepest, darkest secrets and forming a connection I never thought could break. Until one day, it did. Then, out of the blue, a new letter arrived. A scathing one - one with eight years of pent-up anger. I had no choice but to finally come clean as to why I stopped writing. Griffin forgave me, and we were able to rekindle our childhood connection.

My planned trip for two unexpectedly turned into a trip for one. Rather than let my breakup get me down, I packed my bags and decided a week at a luxury resort was just what I needed. But one calamity after the next, and suddenly I was stuck without a hotel room, along with a few hundred other people. It looked like my fancy vacation was about to turn into me sleeping on the hotel lobby floor. Until I overheard a gorgeous man pretending to be someone he wasn’t in order to steal a reservation from a guest who hadn’t shown up yet.

What do you do when a sexy older man moves into your family’s summer rental? Well, apparently, you make a fool of yourself - over and over. Things didn’t exactly get off on the right foot with Noah Cavallari. Our first encounter was embarrassing, to say the least. But despite that, I found myself waking up every day with a newfound energy. Nothing exciting ever happened on the lake - not until Noah moved into the small boathouse on our property. When my mother became ill, I inherited the responsibility of making sure our guests were well taken care of.

The first time I met Caine West was in a bar. He noticed me looking his way and mistakenly read my scowling as checking him out. When he attempted to talk to me, I set him straight -- telling him what I thought of his lying, cheating, egomaniacal ass. You see, the gorgeous jerk had wined and dined my best friend-smooth talking her into his bed, all along failing to mention that he was married. He deserved every bit of my tongue-lashing and more for what he'd done.

My love story all started with a letter. Only it wasn’t from the man I’d eventually fall in love with. It was from his daughter. A sweet little girl named Birdie Maxwell who’d written to the magazine that I worked for. You see, once a year my employer fulfilled a few wishes for readers. Only that column didn’t start up again for months. So I fulfilled some of her wishes myself. It was harmless…so I thought. Until one day I took things too far. While anonymously granting yet another of Birdie’s wishes, I got a look at her father.

It all started with a mysterious blue note sewn into a wedding dress. Something blue. I’d gone to sell my own unworn bridal gown at a vintage clothing store. That’s when I found another bride’s “something old". Stitched into the lining of a fabulously feathered design was the loveliest message I’d ever read: Thank you for making all of my dreams come true.

It seemed like a good idea at the time. Look up Landon Roderick, that boy from childhood whom I'd never been able to forget - even though he so easily forgot about me - and call him. Then again, anything sounds like a good idea when you've had a little too much wine before bed, right? It was supposed to be just a quick, meaningless prank call. Instead I went off on him - unloading 13 years of pent-up emotions. I didn't think he'd call me back.

Publisher's Summary
From the author of the number-one best-selling romance Jake Undone comes a friends-to-lovers story of longing, passion, betrayal, and redemption...with a twist that will rip out your heart.
Skylar was my best friend, but I secretly pined for her. One thing after another kept us apart, and I've spent the last decade in fear of losing her forever. First it was the cancer, but she survived only to face the unthinkable at my hands. Because of me, she left town. For years I thought I'd never see her again. But now she's back - and living with him. I don't deserve her after everything I've put her through, but I can't live without her. This is my last chance because she's about to make the biggest mistake of her life. I can see it in her eyes: She doesn't love him. She still loves me - which is why I have to stop her before it's too late.

Enjoyable audiobooks
I really liked this audiobook, it was well narrated and full of angst with a HEA. I sometimes wished the heroine would 'grow a backbone' and quit being so timid about what she really wants. But in the end she does exactly that, so all is resolved.

Some people are destined to be together.
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Absolutely. First of all the story is AMAZING. Secondly, the narrators were very good.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Mitch - He didn't seem to be able to catch a break. He ended up taking blame for things that weren't entirely his fault. All he wanted was the girl he had loved since he was 11 years old.
Which scene was your favorite?
I loved the scene at the beach house when Skylar finally makes her decision.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I did find myself teary at some points in this story. I was also frustrated at the obstacles that this poor couple continued to have to face. But overall, it just put me in my happy place.
Any additional comments?
Love Penelope Ward's stories. This series has been so good.

A rating overall....
My Review:
Overall: 4.5
Performance: 4.0
Story:4.75
I got online and bought this audiobook immediately after finishing Jake Undone. I was so excited that Mitch and Skylar were going to get their own story, but wow...I did not expect their road to be quite so rocky.
These two characters will break your heart. Mitch has abandonment issues that Skylar keys into when they are just children. She accepts him and comforts him from the very start. This story travels from when they are around age 8 until they are getting close to thirty (guessing here...it's somewhere between 25 and 30.)
As you would expect when the story covers that many years, there are a lot of highs and heartbreaking lows for these two characters. Seriously, this book broke my heart. I loved them both so much and to see them constantly going through such hardship and kept apart by circumstances KILLED me.
And ack...now I'm at a loss as to what else to say without giving spoilers.
You need to read this book.
Is that enough? Seriously, it's an emotional read and I loved both the characters. It's a tough road for them, but that makes the end just that much sweeter. I was so happy by the time the book ended.
Read it. I think you will like it.
And I do recommend this one on audio. (Jake Undone too.) And regardless of my slightly lower rating for the narrators on this one, it was VERY well done. My issue was there are two narrators for the male and female leads. The female is spot-on....she did an AMAZING job. The guy...I just hated his voice for Skylar, but you know...he's a guy. It's hard for a guy to do a good female voice without it sounding ridiculous. I didn't like his voice for her, but other than that, he was a great narrator too. (And honestly, the odds are good that his voice wouldn't bother most of you reading this review.)

A Disappointment
I was so excited for the telling of Skylar's story, perhaps I let my expectations run away with me...I couldn't help but be disappointed when the plot unfolded. It just felt a little more like a N.Sparkes novel than earlier Penelope Ward.

YA STORY.... HEARTBREAKING, BEAUTIFUL & MOVING
Mitch and Skylar met when they were young and straight away they became inseparable, they had similar family issues and their whole world was each other. And the deep friendship soon turned into love but fate had so many heartbreaking challenges for them that it seemed that they would never truly find the happiness they both craved that could only happen by being together.
This wasn't an easygoing read as it dealt with cancer, the after-effects of it and a truly evil bitch who wanted what wasn't hers and her actions caused devastation and heartache that would span years. Mitch and Skylar moved on apart but never moved forward and a chance meeting gave Mitch another opportunity to change their fate. There were some happy times, some funny times, lots of romantic and touching times but above all this was a sad listen because no matter how hard Mitch and Skylar loved each other it just never seemed enough and because of this years were wasted.
Dual POV with a small Chapter from 'the bitch', great narration and each narrator could easily do the other sexes voice, very very romantic plot that did have some nice sex scenes at the end and the characters were both so likeable.
Worth a credit? If you like YA romances then Yes, this was well written and worth a credit but it was maybe a bit too YA for me however I enjoyed it. Remember it's not a sunshine and roses listen but more one of tender hope, love, turmoil, tears, regrets, love, heartache, pain and then again love. But when fate gave them a second chance it was a beautiful romantic tear-filled reunion and repair of two broken souls.

5 Emotional Stars
Oh I don't know that I can make this review good enough to describe this story. It's been sitting in my library for a long time. And late last night I thought what the heck I would give it a try.
Needless to say I had to make my self stop at 3 am to sleep. I cried, I laughed, I cried again, got mad, got happy, and cried again.
Narrators were awesome brought this story to life I felt like I was part of the story.
I won't summaries the story because you already get that in the book description. I will just say holy HOT MEN, B- itchy women. And unbelievable strength and unwavering love and devotion that's what this book has in spades.
Worth the money, the credit. If you like romance and childhood love this is for YOU!!

I really enjoy stories that start out when the main characters are young and fall in love and that love endures!! This one is well written, good plot twists.
