Publisher's Summary

If J. J. Abrams, Margaret Atwood, and Alan Weisman collaborated on a novel...it might be this awesome.

Area X has been cut off from the rest of the continent for decades. Nature has reclaimed the last vestiges of human civilization. The first expedition returned with reports of a pristine, Edenic landscape; all the members of the second expedition committed suicide; the third expedition died in a hail of gunfire as its members turned on one another; the members of the 11th expedition returned as shadows of their former selves, and within months of their return, all had died of aggressive cancer.

This is the 12th expedition. Their group is made up of four women: an anthropologist, a surveyor, a psychologist - the de facto leader - and a biologist, who is our narrator. Their mission is to map the terrain and collect specimens; to record all their observations, scientific and otherwise, of their surroundings and of one another; and, above all, to avoid being contaminated by Area X itself. They arrive expecting the unexpected, and Area X delivers - they discover a massive topographic anomaly and life-forms that surpass understanding - but it's the surprises that came across the border with them, and the secrets the expedition members are keeping from one another, that change everything.

Science as fiction

The depth of analysis as our protagonist perseveres to understand the unknown world of Area X is truly astounding! The book begs rereading as I do not have a college degree in biology and I look forward to doing exactly that.

Unpredictable

Very good story, brutal narrative. 100% good stuff but be aware: It can be distressful some times.

A great read.

I really enjoyed this one and I will be listening to the next one in the trilogy.
Also, the narrator is fantastic.

Commenti on biologist

I was not able to connect with the character’s way of life - one may be totally immersed in observing the wonders of life, be a total introvert & yet be totally honest with team mates & share personal observation (spore infection) with them. Interesting story line but killing & selfish characters took away from the adventure.

Enjoyed it and onto the next in series.

I really enjoyed this book and the narrator. It was fitting for the characters. Moving on to the next in the series after listening to this all in two days.

awesome book

it was so easy to read, it was creppy and hard to stop, the strangeness of Area X is well done. its a must read.

meh performance, great book

i found the performance incredibly droll, and little effort was put into the various characters. But the contents of the book itself were amazing.

The movie was better

There are a lot of page-long run-on sentences in this book that disrupt or distract from the content. There are also many beautiful and interesting things, which I was glad to read the book for, but in general I would say it's too long, anti-climactic and sort of lacks a point. The narrator has a nice voice but is extremely monotone throughout, which removes the horror and suspenseful elements altogether.

What just happened?

I think this book is well written, I loved the story. But, man, did this story flew by. Before I knew it, it was ended.

I was left with a general sence of what it was all about, sure. Overall, I loved the story!
