Publisher's Summary

Lisa Gardner's runaway New York Times bestseller - a fast-paced thrill ride featuring Detective D. D. Warren.

Seven years ago, carefree college student Flora Dane was kidnapped while on spring break. For 472 days, Flora learned just how much one person can endure.

Miraculously alive after her ordeal, Flora has spent the past five years reacquainting herself with the rhythms of normal life, working with her FBI victim advocate, Samuel Keynes. She has a mother who’s never stopped loving her, a brother who is scared of the person she’s become, and a bedroom wall covered with photos of other girls who’ve never made it home.

When Boston detective D. D. Warren is called to the scene of a crime - a dead man and the bound, naked woman who killed him - she learns that Flora has tangled with three other suspects since her return to society. Is Flora a victim or a vigilante? And with her firsthand knowledge of criminal behavior, could she hold the key to rescuing a missing college student whose abduction has rocked Boston? When Flora herself disappears, D.D. realizes a far more sinister predator is out there. One who’s determined that this time, Flora Dane will never escape. And now it is all up to D. D. Warren to find her.

What the critics say

"As Flora, [narrator Kirsten] Potter transitions from the fragile tones of a survivor to her fearful, desperate thoughts while being held by her captor. Portraying Warren, Potter projects confidence and excitement as the detective uses her intuition to get to the bottom of the case. Each snappy remark adds power and validity to this strong character while engaging the listener." ( AudioFile)

Disturbing subject

I listened to the whole book but at times needed to stop due to the graphic discrimination of a very scary subject.

If you like graphic crime serial killers and racists this story is for you.

Heckuva Thriller

Like it's ripped from the headlines.. this book reads like a 'Based on a True Story' Docu-drama. In this 'D.D.Warren/Flora Dane' Mystery-Thriller, Gardner writes extremely well. The plot has plenty of jawdropping but plausible twists and turns - and the author enlivens the book with interesting characters (that you don't really *like* per se), vivid descriptions, and a great atmosphere with uncomfortable tension.
The plot in this one (a story following the abduction of a psychologically-damaged survivor of a previous abduction) is not much of a "mystery" or "procedural"- more of a Suspense Thriller.. but the good FAR outweighs the bad, even though there are *multiple* abductions. It gets a little confusing... "Now which time is this?"
Still, it's an engrossing story.

Kirsten Potter is an excellent reader. She exhibits lots of emotion, commendable cadence/timbre, and unimpeachable enunciation. Her occasionally sharp intakes of breath between sentences mean that you should avoid headphones - but notwithstanding an annoying Bahston accent portrayal for 'Detective Phil', her voice-acting is outstanding on this recording.

There are only very small deficiencies in this audiobook version of a harrowing thriller.. and they are pretty easily ignored. I give this superlative D.D.Warren episode 9.5 stars out of 10. It's the best in the series. Spend the Credit.

Another amazing book.

I am a huge fan of Lisa Gardner. I could not stop the book till it was finished. Very well narrated. I love the fact that her female characters are strong willed, intelligent and do not back down. They fight for what is right for them.
