Story
The story opens with the apparently accidental drowning of a sixth form student in the Norfolk countryside. As a matter of routine, or so it seems, the case passes across the desk of Detective Sergeant Smith, recently returned to work after an internal investigation into another case that has led to tensions between officers at Kings Lake police headquarters. As an ex-DCI, Smith could have retired by now, and it is clear that some of his superiors wish that he would do so.

Story
Detective Sergeant Chris Waters got the call at 05.29 that July morning. This is it, said DCI Reeve, you'll be first there, it's all yours, you're the crime scene manager. Suddenly, after months of waiting and wondering, Waters finds himself in at the deep end, and alone at the scene of a puzzling murder. As the investigation proceeds, the detectives at Kings Lake Central find themselves visiting familiar places and talking to some familiar faces, while old enmities reappear in the incident room. Before this is over, Chris Waters will need to make a career-changing decision.

Publisher's Summary
In the peace and tranquility of the woods at Pinehills on a Saturday afternoon, a mobile phone begins to ring. The phone belongs to DC Smith, and it isn't unusual that the call is from Kings Lake Central police station; what is unusual is the fact that he seems to be the subject of an investigation rather than taking part in one. What can the links be between a prisoner's violent death in another county, the disappearance of two teenagers, and the highest profile case in Kings Lake for many years? As Smith and his team begin to untangle the threads, one thing becomes clear - they are dealing with some of the most dangerous people that they have yet encountered.

Intermediate Between 'Cozy' and 'Contemporary'
This Peter Grainger mystery starts with the discovery of King's Lake Detective Sergeant David "DC" Smith's phone number on the body of a murdered prisoner and evolves organically into an intriguing investigation involving competing police forces, missing teenagers, and international drug dealing consortia.
The investigation is notably "old school": light on forensics (albeit including digital footprint data and CCTV evidence) but heavy on tried and true gumshoe techniques like intuition, observation, stakeouts, and interviews. Grainger makes brilliant use of his fascinating throwback policeman teaching what he knows to mentees like DC Chris Waters and DC Serena Butler.. delivering a capable procedural with a distinctly nostalgic feel.
The book is entirely free of sex, violence, and expletives - but still has enough realism to satisfy fans looking for sober Crime Fiction.
Doubtless, another pitch-perfect performance from Gildart Jackson adds to the enjoyability of the book, too. Tantor Audio cast these audiobooks beautifully.
'Persons Of Interest' rates 8 stars out of 10. It's capable of standing alone - but is more enjoyable if you've consumed previous episodes in the 'DC Smith' series (there are occasional references to previous investigations).
Regardless, I feel fortunate to have gotten the book as a 'Plus' selection.. because it would merit a Credit for mystery afficianados looking for something uncomplicated but grittier than what "Cozy" Mysteries can offer.

Love DC Smith stories
Persons of Interest is another Peter Grainger story about DC Smith - a quiet hero who likes to do his work his way even though it frustrates other people. Gildart Jackson is a great narrator and I really enjoy all the stories that I have listened to in this series.
