Publisher's Summary

In the corridors of Chicago's top law firm:

Twenty-six-year-old Adam Hall stands on the brink of a brilliant legal career. Now he is risking it all for a death-row killer and an impossible case.

Maximum Security Unit, Mississippi State Prison:

Sam Cayhall is a former Klansman and unrepentant racist now facing the death penalty for a fatal bombing in 1967. He has run out of chances - except for one: the young, liberal Chicago lawyer who just happens to be his grandson. While the executioners prepare the gas chamber, while the protesters gather and the TV cameras wait, Adam has only days, hours, minutes to save his client. For between the two men is a chasm of shame, family lies, and secrets - including the one secret that could save Sam Cayhall's life...or cost Adam his.

"A dark and thoughtful tale pulsing wit moral uncertainties...Grisham is at his best." (People)

"Compelling.... Powerful.... The Chamber will make readers think long and hard about the death penalty." (USA Today)

What the critics say

"His best yet." (The Houston Post)

"Mesmerizing...with an authority and originality...and with a grasp of literary complexity that makes Scott Turow's novels pale by comparison - Grisham returns." (San Francisco Chronicle)

Great story

The book was great. The reading style was obviously in the early days of audio books, but it was enjoyable nonetheless.

Wonderfully written story

This story pulled me in... it made me cry. The story brings you in and has you hoping a murdered could go free. Never felt so absorbed by a story. I highly recommend The Chamber.

Boring

Didn’t have the ending that was foreshadowed. Instead it ended exactly as expected. Not worth it

The Chamber

Another great book from this author. The story was descriptive but not too descriptive as to make the story drag. I was able to visualize the characters in my mind. The narrator had a great voice and the story was very informative about the laws in the south and the prejudices there. I couldn’t stop reading and finished the story very quick.

Incredible Story + Wonderful Characters

This book has the kindest antihero I think I've ever loved. Grisham won me over with this book decades ago, and listening to it for the first time since I read the book all those years ago, I marvel at how Grisham can take a nasty, hateful character, and turn him into someone you wish would live forever.

Good narrator, boring and flawed story.

The topic of capital punishment discussed through the eyes of the left. Odd slant, more sympathy for the criminals than the victims and their families.

Boring

I usually enjoy John Grisham’s books but this one has to be the most long and boring books I’ve ever listened to / read. Glad it’s over so I can start something new. I kept going because I assumed, incorrectly that it would get better.
