Publisher's Summary

The spine-tingling, bone-chilling novel of supernatural suspense from the number one New York Times best-selling author of The Fireman and Horns - now an AMC original series starring Zachary Quinto, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, and Ashleigh Cummings.

"A masterwork of horror." (Time)

Victoria McQueen has an uncanny knack for finding things: a misplaced bracelet, a missing photograph, answers to unanswerable questions. When she rides her bicycle over the rickety old covered bridge in the woods near her house, she always emerges in the places she needs to be.

Charles Talent Manx has a gift of his own. He likes to take children for rides in his 1938 Rolls-Royce Wraith with the vanity plate NOS4A2. In the Wraith, he and his innocent guests can slip out of the everyday world and onto hidden roads that lead to an astonishing playground of amusements he calls Christmasland.

The journey across the highway of Charlie's twisted imagination transforms his precious passengers, leaving them as terrifying and unstoppable as their benefactor.

Then comes the day when Vic goes looking for trouble...and finds her way to Charlie. That was a lifetime ago. Now, the only kid ever to escape Charlie's evil is all grown up and desperate to forget. But Charlie Manx hasn't stopped thinking about Victoria McQueen. On the road again, he won't slow down until he's taken his revenge. He's after something very special - something Vic can never replace.

As a life-and-death battle of wills builds, Vic McQueen prepares to destroy Charlie once and for all - or die trying.

What the critics say

"Quite simply the best horror writer of our generation, Joe Hill’s masterful storytelling is on full display in NOS4A2. It is by turns terrifying and hilarious, horrifying and full of heart, and relentlessly compelling." (Michael Koryta, New York Times bestselling author of The Prophet)
"Fascinating and utterly engaging, this novel is sure to leave readers wanting more. One thing is for certain, however. After reading this book, readers will never hear Christmas carols in quite the same way again." ( Library Journal, starred review)
"[A] new take on the fantasy-horror genre...Highly recommended." ( The Sun Herald Sydney, Australia)

As well written as it is read.

Thought provoking horror that will make you think about your own life and upbringing, bring out your insecurities, and leave you with a powerful message.

Story was fast paced, thrilling and great narrator

the narrator had different voices for every character and kept you on your toes the whole time!! You would know which person came into a scene just from her different voices. This book was an amazing read in general but honestly the woman reading msdr it was an 10 to a 30 out of 10. I have already downloaded another book by Joe Hill and can't wait to start it!

Where is the next one?

I looked everywhere after finishing this book for the sequel.
Nada.
Due to the age of this book, I am assuming one is not forthcoming.
That's too bad, I was totally sucked into this story!

A Semi-sweet Christmas

I'm so excited to have visited Christmasland. It is the most wonderful place ever and you should join me where it is Christmas every day of the year. Please take me back to Christmasland....but seriously this book was good. Great story. I know Joe Hill really likes this narrator as per the post-novel interview but unfortunately that is where I had some problems. Kate Mulgrew is quite capable as a narrator and generally does a good job through most, and a really good job with the antagonist performance. However, the voice used for a lot of the kids, yelling, whining, crying and certain characters is so ear-bleedingly annoying that it completely turns me off. I struggled to get through sections where there was a lot of that because it was so grating and honestly ruined the performance for me. I generally recommend audiobook over print for a lot of books, but for me I recommend the reverse. Do yourself a favour and get the print copy if you can.

10/10 would recommend

Loved this story. Kate Mulgrew is a brilliant narrator. I prefer actors as narrators, and she kills it.

Thrilling and Emotional

Just what I could hope for in a horror novel. Intense, terrifying, magical, and packed with complex emotion, NOS4A2 is brilliant ride from start to finish.

It tells the story of Vic McQueen, a girl with the ability to be transported to anywhere she needs to be, only to find herself in the crosshairs of a ruthless serial killer and his crony, and have her life altered forever.

Vic is as complicated as a character can be, going from highs to lows, lights to darks, all in the pursuit of protecting what she loves. She’s a great protagonist who feels real, makes mistakes, and who I wanted to succeed from start to finish.

However, Vic is up against some horrifying opponents, including the ruthless Charlie Manx. And Bing. Don’t get me started on my loathing for that POS.

The side characters are all different and add great layers to Vic, with Maggie being a standout for me.

The plot takes place over years so at times it feels like a long book, though that time is used to get closer to and understand the characters. It makes for a saga that leads to a thrilling conclusion.

This story is brutal and creepy, with vivid imagery and battles that had me cringing. The prose makes for a visceral experience that had me eager to continue to the bittersweet ending.

Excellent for Halloween (or a creepy Christmas), I highly recommend NOS4A2!

What a story!

I kept forgetting that there was only one voice actor narrating the story, Kate Mulgrew is my new favourite story teller, light years ahead of the rest. I was simply captivated by this book, in fact, I consistently found myself unwilling to stop listening, engine running, door open one leg out of the car long after arriving somewhere.
Great story, well narrated, excellent character development, kept me up late, made late for work and occasionally for supper.
