Publisher's Summary

New York Times Best Seller

The new must-listen epic from master storyteller Ken Follett: more than a thriller, it’s an action-packed, globe-spanning drama set in the present day.

“A compelling story, and only too realistic.” (Lawrence H. Summers, former U.S. Treasury Secretary)

“Every catastrophe begins with a little problem that doesn’t get fixed.” So says Pauline Green, president of the United States, in Follett’s nerve-racking drama of international tension.

A shrinking oasis in the Sahara Desert; a stolen US Army drone; an uninhabited Japanese island; and one country’s secret stash of deadly chemical poisons: all these play roles in a relentlessly escalating crisis.

Struggling to prevent the outbreak of world war are a young woman intelligence officer; a spy working undercover with jihadists; a brilliant Chinese spymaster; and Pauline herself, beleaguered by a populist rival for the next president election.

Never is an extraordinary novel, full of heroines and villains, false prophets and elite warriors, jaded politicians and opportunistic revolutionaries. It brims with cautionary wisdom for our times, and delivers a visceral, heart-pounding story that transports listeners to the brink of the unimaginable.

who wrote this? not Ken Follett for sure

I have read and enjoyed everything Follett has written, except this. first book of his that I have given up on. This seems to be written for a different audience from usual.

Disappointing

Not a typical enlightening and entertaining Follett novel. Rambling, boring and very disappointing. I tried to like this book and failed. Returned to Audible.

Merely a primer for newbies to international intrigue

The storyline walks the reader through the geopolitical world at the level of an average tv series. Descriptions of event are handled in a general manner leaving avid readers searching for the next level of content: those things that Ian Fleming would relish in. In-depth descriptions of the details of cloak and dagger are lacking. Some explanations are juvenile.
For a long novel this becomes grating.

Excellent Narration with amazing voice adaptation

My first Ken Follet novel was a winner! The narrator could alter her voice to make the characters come to life. I was captivated from the beginning and enjoyed the thrill.

Just OK

The best part about this book is the narrator. Not one of Follett's finest.

One of his best

I love everything by Ken Follet. This one had me up for two days to finish it. Amazing and horrifying story.

Not as in depth as most of Follets books

This one of Follets novels is definitely an easy read although the subject matter is quite disturbing and only too relevant. I found the story line a little simplistic. I am not privy to the workings of the White House but doubt these decisions are made as quickly and without multiple attempts at diplomacy .. but who knows .. today unfortunately maybe people are more linear in there thinking and that is what Follet wanted to portray.

Hoping that is not the case. Still love reading his books!
