National Best Seller

Selected as one of NPR's Top 100 Science Fiction and Fantasy Books of All Time

The number one New York Times best-selling author's wildly successful first novel featuring his new Neverwhere tale, "How the Marquis Got His Coat Back".

Richard Mayhew is a young man with a good heart and an ordinary life, which is changed forever when he stops to help a girl he finds bleeding on a London sidewalk. His small act of kindness propels him into a world he never dreamed existed. There are people who fall through the cracks, and Richard has become one of them. And he must learn to survive in this city of shadows and darkness, monsters and saints, murderers and angels, if he is ever to return to the London that he knew.

"A fantastic story that is both the stuff of dreams and nightmares" (San Diego Union-Tribune), Neil Gaiman's first solo novel has become a touchstone of urban fantasy and a perennial favorite of readers and listeners everywhere.

Great, but not a masterwork

Neverwhere is both an entertaining book and a compelling love letter to London. Anyone familiar with the city will be sure to enjoy how Gaiman has reimagined its iconic locales.

As always Gaiman is an excellent reader of his own novels. It's a pleasure to hear him read his writing and experience his own vision for the story in his tone and inflections.

Held up to the bar of Gaiman's masterpieces like The Sandman or The Ocean at the End of the Lane, Neverwhere does fall a fair ways short. However, it is a fun and fully realized piece of urban fantasy that any fan of the genre, or of Gaiman himself, shouldn't miss.

The best way to experience this story

I had never read Neil Gaiman when I got this audiobook. Within two chapters I went to the store and bought a copy to read along.

The story follows a boring young Scottish man, Richard, who accidentally gets himself entangled in a fantastical fantasy version of London after a chance encounter with a young girl named Door. From the bland and mundane to the utterly fantastical the story twists and turns as Richard discovers what courage he has and reevaluates the values of his life before entering London-Below.

This audio version has the great benefit of being performed by Neil Gaiman himself, who I fell in love with through his narration. The way he reads his own words is captivating, he breathes life into his characters and his world in a way that is impossible not to get pulled in.

It is a perfect introduction to Gaiman's work, I have since purchased other titles and will likely be spending a few credits on other audiobooks to accompany them in future, this is a must listen if you need a quirky adventure as told by a masterful story teller.

I wrote this review for the #Audible1 contest, but I chose this book from among my library because it best deserves my attention. It's long overdue and I really should have sang it's praises a long time ago.

Beautifully presented enthralling story.

I could listen to Niel Gaiman read his own works indefinitely. Definitely recommend anything he's written and performed.

My favorite book

I love when Neil Gaiman narrates his own books. His cadence, his voices, everything is perfect. Neverwhere has always been one of my most favorite books, and is definitely my favorite audio book.

Excellent story, and narration.

Excellent story, and narration. I've been going through Neil Gaiman's stories, and this is another good one. Very enjoyable. I accidentally listened to an abridged radio version first, thinking that was the full length. Both were great.

Fun listen of another of Gaiman's hidden worlds

Neverwhere takes a little while to hold your interest but Neil Gaima's reading of the book with his strong voice keeps you interested enough to keep listening. Once you are fully a part of London below then you realize why this became a best seller as the story becomes more and more fascinating

Amazing story. Amazing narrator

It made me sad when the story ended because I felt so attached to his characters.

Utterly compelling

Such a wondrous imagination this author has! And don't worry about the fact that it's an author narrating his own book - Neil Gaiman is a brilliant narrator and I would happily listen to him read the back of a cereal box. (Yes, he's that good!) Love the characters, and the concept of a world that exists in parallel with our own, in plain sight and yet unseeable. Urban fantasy married with old school fantasy. An epic, high stakes storyline populated with nefarious villains and a believable, truly human protagonist that you can't help but root for. And just a beautiful ending. (Wait for it!)

Very entertaining and completely enthralling

This story, like Gaiman's others (Anansi Boys, Ocean at the end of the lane) is imaginative and sucks you right in. The narration is well paced and expertly edited.
I would use this story as an example of why audiobooks are good as reading the actual things.

A fine story performed excellently

Neverwhere's a fine book, through and through. What's keeping me from saying it's great is the passivity of Richard, the main character. Richard function is to be the eyes of the reader as they take in London Below without doing anything remarkable. His "hero moments" are given to him. It isn't like he does something clever to solve a puzzle or win a battle. He gets lucky and the story moves on.
The plot is mostly tramping through London Below looking for people and things, which is fine. London Below is an interesting and creative place. To me, it's a great analogy for homelessness. And Gaiman is in his element here in terms of writing, describing everything in a way that feels very fresh and original.
