Publisher's Summary

If you’re on the list, someone wants you dead.

From the New York Times bestselling author of Eight Perfect Murders comes the heart-pounding story of nine strangers who receive a cryptic list with their names on it—and then begin to die in highly unusual circumstances.

Nine strangers receive a list with their names on it in the mail. Nothing else, just a list of names on a single sheet of paper. None of the nine people know or have ever met the others on the list. They dismiss it as junk mail, a fluke—until very, very bad things begin happening to people on the list.

First, a well-liked old man is drowned on a beach in the small town of Kennewick, Maine. Then, a father is shot in the back while running through his quiet neighborhood in suburban Massachusetts. A frightening pattern is emerging, but what do these nine people have in common? Their professions range from oncology nurse to aspiring actor, and they’re located all over the country. So why are they all on the list, and who sent it?

FBI agent Jessica Winslow, who is on the list herself, is determined to find out. Could there be some dark secret that binds them all together? Or is this the work of a murderous madman? As the mysterious sender stalks these nine strangers, they find themselves constantly looking over their shoulders, wondering who will be crossed off next…

Okay

The idea was great but the execution was not. The 9 characters hopped all over the place so you didn’t have time to properly know who was who and got confusing a few times because of this. A nice little twist at the end. Overall, an Agatha Christie mystery without true character development. Would pass.

Intelligent mystery

Really enjoyed this book. Great story, narration was fabulous and just enough guessing to make it fun. Honestly didn’t know what was going to happen next which was interesting for a ‘whodunnit’.

EXCELLENT NOVEL!!!

I have read quite a few “suspense/thriller” novels, especially those considered to take place in the domestic/friends sphere. They all pale to almost nonexistent compared with this book! Read it. Read It. READ IT!!!
Awesome performance by the narrator, too :-)

suspenseful, intriguing

narrator was very good although female parts should be read by someone else as it lends to confusion

Thrilling and keeps you guessing till the end

Peter Swanson never disappoints me. Can’t wait for his next book.
Thoroughly enjoyable and a good listen. A bit long winded but very well performed.
Love this book and definitely recommend it.

story is fine, narrator not so much

Swanson is one of my favorite authors and I did enjoy the story. However the narrator is more of a sleeping pill than an entertainer.

Struggled to finish this book

Peter Swanson is one of my favorite authors and I always enjoy his books. Sadly Nine Lives was the exception. It was really hard to follow, needlessly complicated and it was impossible to get attached to any of the characters. I even had a hard time remembering who the character was at the beginning of each chapter. The worse part though was the Narrator who was not a good choice for this type of book. All characters sounded the same and he used this weird inflection at the end of each sentence where he accentuated the last word. In my opinion it created an annoying cadence which was almost hypnotizing. I hope I’ll enjoy Swanson’s next book!
