Story
In Trauma and Memory, best-selling author Dr. Peter Levine (creator of the Somatic Experiencing approach) tackles one of the most difficult and controversial questions of PTSD/trauma therapy: Can we trust our memories? While some argue that traumatic memories are unreliable and not useful, others insist that we absolutely must rely on memory to make sense of past experience. Dr. Levine suggests that there are elements of truth in both camps.

Story
In this culmination of his life’s work, Peter A. Levine draws on his broad experience as a clinician, a student of comparative brain research, a stress scientist and a keen observer of the naturalistic animal world to explain the nature and transformation of trauma in the body, brain and psyche. In an Unspoken Voice is based on the idea that trauma is neither a disease nor a disorder, but rather an injury caused by fright, helplessness and loss that can be healed by engaging our innate capacity to self-regulate high states of arousal and intense emotions.

Story
In this best-selling book, one of America's most distinguished psychologists crystallises the great progress that has been made in the development of the techniques and basic philosophy of counselling. Carl Rogers gives a clear exposition of procedures by which individuals who are being counselled may be assisted in achieving for themselves new and more effective personality adjustments. Contemporary psychology derives largely from the experimental laboratory or from Freudian theory. It is preoccupied with minute aspects of animal and human behaviour or with psychopathology.

Waking the Tiger offers a new and hopeful vision of trauma. It views the human animal as a unique being, endowed with an instinctual capacity. It asks and answers an intriguing question: Why are animals in the wild, though threatened routinely, rarely traumatized? By understanding the dynamics that make wild animals virtually immune to traumatic symptoms, the mystery of human trauma is revealed.

The concepts and interventions introduced in this book are designed as an adjunct to, and in support of, other methods of treatment rather than as a stand-alone treatment or manualized approach. By drawing on the therapeutic relationship and adjusting interventions to the particular needs of each client, thoughtful attention to what is being spoken beneath the words through the body can heighten the intimacy of the therapist/client journey and help change take place more easily in the hidden recesses of the self.

An intense conversation, a spat with a partner, or even an obnoxious tweet - these situations aren't life-or-death, yet we often react as if they are. That's because our bodies treat most perceived threats the same way. Yet one approach has proven to be incredibly effective in training our nervous system to stop overreacting: polyvagal theory. In Anchored, expert teacher Deb Dana shares a down-to-earth presentation of polyvagal theory, then brings the science to life with practical, everyday ways to transform your relationship with your body.

Publisher's Summary
A practical, integrated approach for therapists working with people (both adults and children) who have been impacted by developmental trauma and attachment difficulties
Kathy L. Kain and Stephen J. Terrell draw on 50 years of their combined clinical and teaching experience to provide this clear road map for understanding the complexities of early trauma and its related symptoms. Experts in the physiology of trauma, the authors present an introduction to their innovative somatic approach that has evolved to help thousands improve their lives. Synthesizing across disciplines - Attachment, Polyvagal, Neuroscience, Child Development Theory, Trauma, and Somatics - this book provides a new lens through which to understand safety and regulation. It includes the survey used in the groundbreaking ACE Study, which discovered a clear connection between early childhood trauma and chronic health problems.
For therapists working with both adults and children and anyone dealing with symptoms that typically arise from early childhood trauma - anxiety, behavioral issues, depression, metabolic disorders, migraine, sleep problems, and more - this book offers fresh hope.
What the critics say
“Nurturing Resilience offers a new map for navigating the process of healing from developmental trauma and skillfully incorporates the often-overlooked role of touch in repairing and restoring relational well-being. Written in clear, accessible prose and drawing on research across multiple disciplines, this book is a remarkable achievement by two seasoned and respected somatic practitioner educators.” (Rae Johnson, PhD, RSMT, chair of the somatic studies specialization in the depth psychology doctoral program at Pacifica Graduate Institute and author of Embodied Social Justice)
“Brilliant! Kathy and Stephen have produced a groundbreaking work that provides a deeper understanding of the interface between developmental trauma and mental and physical disorders and most importantly the pathways to their healing.” (Michael Ocana, MD, medical director of Kelowna Adolescent Psychiatric Unit and clinical assistant professor at the University of British Columbia)
“This book synthesizes the simplicity of our human quest for safety and connection with the complexities of our biological design. As vanguards in somatic therapies, Kathy and Stephen have trained thousands of therapists all over the world and are now graciously imparting their strategies for resilience through this gift of their combined wisdom.” (Christopher Walling, PsyD, president of the United States Association of Body Psychotherapy)

I enjoyed the content of this book. My hope was to better understand and equip myself. I have purchased the soft copy as I found it hard to really digest all the information presented. However, it is a marvelous introduction and fascinating listen. I would recommend it.

Finally. This is the book you're looking for if...
If you are a therapist (I'm an accredited muisc therapist, 4 year degree plus a 1000 hour supervised internship) and work with trauma this is the book you've been looking for. First read anything by Daniel Seigal and The Body Keeps The Score and then read this. This book is for the therapist who just needs support for how to help clients with developmental trauma. Seeing as a huge part of the population has this, I can only see the information in this book being the most important ideas of our century. I'll have to buy it in physical form so I can take notes and make outlines to help me "plan" my preparedness for sessions. Thank you so much. I wish I had this book 6 years ago when I was in internship.
