Publisher's Summary

New York Times best-selling author Jen Hatmaker, with playful hilarity, shameless honesty, and refreshing insight, assures listeners they have all the pluck they need for vibrant, courageous, grace-filled lives.

Jen Hatmaker believes backbone is the birthright of every woman. Women have been demonstrating resiliency and resolve since forever. They have incredibly strong shoulders to bear loss, hope, grief, and vision. She laughs at the days to come is how the ancient wisdom writings put it.

But somehow women have gotten the message that pain and failure mean they must be doing things wrong, that they messed up the rules or tricks for a seamless life. As it turns out, every last woman faces confusion and loss, missteps and catastrophic malfunctions, no matter how much she is doing "right". Struggle doesn't mean they're weak; it means they're alive.

Jen Hatmaker, beloved author, big sister emeritus, and chief BFF, offers another round of hilarious tales, frank honesty, and hope for the woman who has forgotten her moxie. Whether discussing the grapple with change ("Everyone, be into this thing I'm into! Except when I'm not. Then everyone be cool.") or the time she drove to the wrong city for a fourth-grade field trip ("Why are we in San Antonio?"), Jen parlays her own triumphs and tragedies into a sigh of relief for all normal, fierce women everywhere who, like her, sometimes hide in the car eating crackers but also want to get back up and get back out, to live undaunted in the moment no matter what the moments hold.

What the critics say

"The self-described low-grade Christian author narrates her own story. She provides anecdotes not included in the written text, which add more fun to the listening experience.... Hatmaker's use of sarcasm and self-deprecation is disarming as she tackles varied topics, making this book sound like a conversation with a trusted friend. Listeners should have a pen and paper ready to take down her recipes and helpful tips." (AudioFile)

Honest, fresh writing.

I loved that Jen (the author) read the book - it provided a raw, honest interpretation of the content.
This book is an encouraging, uplifting, honest look at a woman's life - specifically a woman who has birthed a child and lived a few seasons. I would recommend this book as a gift, a personal read, and one to be revisited. It is definitely "for the ladies", and for a woman with a sense of humour, or at least appreciates a humorous approach to real life.

Inclusive

This book is my first really heartfelt invitation to understand and be welcomed into Christianity. Jen weaves a tale full of wisdom, laughter, tenderness, and empathy.

LOVED IT. Thank You Jen.

I laughed out loud. I shed real tears. I pondered deep thoughts. I needed her genuine wisdom on life and parenthood and struggle and chaos... and I think I maybe learned to take life a little less serious. It validated in me the parts of my own life and parenthood adventure that I thought I may be doing right and offered so much encouragement for those areas that feel impossibly hard. Thank You Jen.

Jen’s words in Jen’s voice

This was a laugh out loud and deep book. I also grew up reading Erma Bombeck (and Dave Barry) and love Jen’s use of humour to communicate relatable truths and inspiration.

Jen is hilarious!

Not too often that I read a book and relate so closely that I laugh out loud! This book is delightful, sweet, funny and practical. Not in a religious way because we all know that we need less religion and much more pure love in reality. Thanks Jen Hatmaker for being you, and for making your thoughts known. Michele

Geared towards moms but still good

I don’t have children so a number of chapters were less applicable to me, but that said, I still really enjoyed the funny stories, the emotion and the description of the relationship with her own parents. I’m glad I stuck through to the end (despite not identifying with all the mom stuff) because overall this is a really valuable and touching read. Definitely recommend.
