Detective Sergeant Chris Waters got the call at 05.29 that July morning. This is it, said DCI Reeve, you'll be first there, it's all yours, you're the crime scene manager. Suddenly, after months of waiting and wondering, Waters finds himself in at the deep end, and alone at the scene of a puzzling murder. As the investigation proceeds, the detectives at Kings Lake Central find themselves visiting familiar places and talking to some familiar faces, while old enmities reappear in the incident room. Before this is over, Chris Waters will need to make a career-changing decision.

The story opens with the apparently accidental drowning of a sixth form student in the Norfolk countryside. As a matter of routine, or so it seems, the case passes across the desk of Detective Sergeant Smith, recently returned to work after an internal investigation into another case that has led to tensions between officers at Kings Lake police headquarters. As an ex-DCI, Smith could have retired by now, and it is clear that some of his superiors wish that he would do so.

When Matt Ballard was starting out his career, three boys were murdered in the same area, the remote and bleak Gibbet Fen. When the main suspect was killed in a hit-and-run, the killings stopped. But Matt was not satisfied that the real murderer had been caught. Over 25 years later, Matt gets a photo in an unmarked envelope. It's of the Gibbet Fen crime scene. And the picture was taken before the murder took place. More photos arrive, relating to the historic murders, as well as intimate pictures of Matt's very secret private life.

Description
"He might be a nobody, but he was their nobody and their first case."
The new Kings Lake Central murder squad is about to spend its first morning on team-building exercises and reviewing cold cases when the call comes in that the body of one of the city's rough sleepers has been found in a shop doorway. It happens, someone says, he isn't the first to die on the streets and he won't be the last, but the story the new team begins to uncover is far from routine.
New characters appear and new relationships form as the pressure grows on Detective Chief Inspector Cara Freeman to deliver a result and show that Kings Lake's first specialist team is worth the money. Detective Sergeant Christopher Waters discovers links to a previous investigation, learns that there is more than one way to run a successful squad and finds flower arranging more interesting than he would ever have imagined.

Wow! Series gets better with each outting
Deft characterization, subtle plotting which catches you off guard, plot twists. Characters you can see in your mind’s eye. Peter Grainger has done it all, and so well. His writing is calm. Then suddenly hits with a wallop! The narrator really sets the unhurried mood, and each character is recognizable as an individual. A job well done, Mr. Jackson. Please hurry with third installment!

Done too soon!
I really loved this new book in the series. I had started with book one of this series then realized that there was a series before this so listened to the whole series and fell in love with DC and all the characters! So then had to redo Songbird and appreciated it so much more knowing everyone now. Then this book I really enjoyed the further development of Chris and his new team and was just really loving it when all of a sudden kapow it was over! It definitely left a few dangling leads..... hope the next book in the series is ready soon!! Do yourself a favour and do the DC Smith series first then move onto this one, its stellar writing and the narration is perfect!!

Always love this author. The narrarator fits the books to a T. I cannot imagine DC sounding any different. Love how compassion & empathy runs through when so many of those marginalized are usually left invisible.

Like all of Mr. Grainger’s books, this held my attention, throughout the whole novel. Twists and turns kept me guessing. I liked the ending, but would love to experience more of some of the newer characters.
