John Boehner is the last of a breed. At a time when the arbiters of American culture were obsessing over organic kale, cold-pressed juice, and SoulCycle, the man who stood second in line to the presidency was unapologetically smoking Camels, quaffing a glass of red, and hitting the golf course whenever he could.
There could hardly have been a more diametrically opposed figure to represent the opposition party in President Barack Obama's Washington. But when Boehner announced his resignation, President Obama called to tell the outgoing Speaker that he'd miss him. "Mr. President," Boehner replied, "yes you will." He thought of himself as a "regular guy with a big job," and he enjoyed it.
In addition to his own stories of life in the swamp city and of his comeback after getting knocked off the leadership ladder, Boehner offers his impressions of leaders he's met and what made them successes or failures, from Ford and Reagan to Obama, Trump, and Biden. Read like a neighbour who invites you to a meal
Read like a neighbour who invites you to a meal in his home and then starts to tell the gathering a story that keeps everyone at the table until the wee hours. You learn a great deal, but honestly, you mostly just enjoy the telling. It is a comfortable book that lets you re-listen and hear something new each time. It never gets tired, no matter what else is happening in the world. It is so enveloping that it could be fiction and I would love it just the same.
Thank you for sharing this story, dear (virtual) neighbour. I look forward to our next dinner party (your next novel), I will bring dessert.

Very Interesting
Thanks to Mr Boehner we see how house & senate works . Also pretty scary for us Americans future if Mr Trump gets elected . I hope we do not see our great country fall because of him . Great book to listen to !

Fantastic - a must listen
Made me laugh out loud. A must listen for conservatives and liberals alike.
Too bad he didn’t stick around for longer.
I’m going to recommend it to a lot of people.

A comforting voice summarizing so much history
Overall I don't regret this purchase - it was simultaneously insightful and funny.
John Boehner has a voice that you can listen to for hours - the whole book I felt like I had a scotch in my hand having a fireside chat.
My biggest gripe is how the time line skips around on some of the stories - for example he will be talking about events in 2011 and then finish off that thread by saying what happened in 2020, then jump back to 2011. If you're not listening intently to every word it's easy to get lost on where he is in the time line.
This was a great listen to learn more about the backroom dealings, trips, and stories from federal politics that often never make it out. His length of service enables such a diverse number of tales that I recommend this as a listen. Even if you don't agree with his politics it's hard not to like him as a person.

This is an American story : Boehner tells his story and in the process reminds us about what truly matters : you can’t get things done demonizing your opponents. You need to give and take and get along with others . You need to be in the room for the right reasons .
This is a no holds barred view on the good the bad and the ugly in the American political landscape and how we get back from the wilderness .
In short it’s easy to burn the barn down . It takes something very different to build one .

One of the most enjoyable I’ve listened to
Its a bipartisan, honest, funny look inside Washington told from a humble point of view. I’m not a republican but I like John more than I did before. Time well spent.
