Publisher's Summary

Another exciting adventure from the number one New York Times best-selling series!

The darkest secrets are the hardest to bring to light....

Sylvestri Yarrow is on a streak of bad luck with no end in sight. She's been doing her best to keep the family cargo business going after her mom's death, but between mounting debt and increasing attacks by the Nihil on unsuspecting ships, Syl is in danger of losing all she has left of her mother. She heads to the galactic capital of Coruscant for help but gets sidetracked when she's drawn into a squabble between two of the Republic's most powerful families over a patch of space on the frontier. Tangled up in familial politics is the last place Syl wants to be, but the promise of a big payoff is enough to keep her interested....

Meanwhile, Jedi Knight Vernestra Rwoh has been summoned to Coruscant, but with no idea of why or by whom. She and her Padawan, Imri Cantaros, arrive at the capital along with Jedi Master Cohmac Vitus and his Padawan, Reath Silas - and are asked to assist with the property dispute on the frontier. But why? What is so important about an empty patch of space?

The answer will lead Vernestra to a new understanding of her abilities and take Syl back to the past...and to truths that will finally come out of the shadows.

Don't miss any of the adventure and excitement of Star Wars: The High Republic!

great story, meh production

it's easily my favorite High Repubblica story, with its spooky tone and atmosphere. I love how it uses the larger story of Light of the Jedi as a backdrop.

Disappointing

I was very much looking forward to the continuing adventures set out in the previous book. Unfortunately what I got was an uninspired teen drama.

To go along with this, while no personal offence to the narrator, the performance fell well below what I have come to expect from audible books in the Star Wars universe. I don’t think this series is in her wheelhouse.

I also need to state that the editing and production was quite weak. No sound effects, essentially no music, again all well below the standards I am accustomed to and expect from an audible Star Wars production. That and the jumps from chapter to chapter were just jarring. Just poor editing.

Quite disappointed all around with this one sadly.

Rough start, great journey!

A rocky start in my opinion, but it was quite enjoyable throughout and it has some potentially interesting setups for the coming wave of High Republic books

Buy the book not the audio

This was a disappointing departure from the typical star wars audiobook. The narrator didn’t use the established Pronunciation of names of key characters and groups. She had little to no Inflection in her voice making the book drawn out and boring. I was only able to finish the book by listening to it at high speed.

Good story, bad audiobook structure

I'll start by saying I enjoyed the story. It was neat, I'd read it again.

I don't know if I'd listen to it again.

For one thing, whoever oversees the star wars audiobooks needs to sit the readers down and make sure that all the names are pronounced the same across the books. The way she pronounces Marchion is different from the first three. This is a stupid mistake.

Secondly, the cut pacing of the chapters is garbage. There's not even half a second between the last word in the chapter and the beginning of the following chapter. It's like running the words together it's so bad.

The last three high republic books did not have these problems. Whoever oversaw this one seriously dropped the ball.

Who switches narrator mid-series

The narrator was not great. The previous one did a great job but they way she portrayed voices are all the same and hard to differentiate. She kept pronouncing Drengir wrong and really throwing me off. Very difficult to actually concentrate with this reader.
