Thorne Manor has always been haunted...and it has always haunted Bronwyn Dale. As a young girl, Bronwyn could pass through a time slip in her great-aunt's house, where she visited William Thorne, a boy her own age, born two centuries earlier. After a family tragedy, the house was shuttered and Bronwyn was convinced that William existed only in her imagination. Now, 20 years later Bronwyn inherits Thorne Manor. And when she returns, William is waiting.

Story
When a banished witch falls in love with the legendary trickster Loki, she risks the wrath of the gods in this moving, subversive debut novel that reimagines Norse mythology. Angrboda’s story begins where most witches' tales end: with a burning. A punishment from Odin for refusing to provide him with knowledge of the future, the fire leaves Angrboda injured and powerless, and she flees into the farthest reaches of a remote forest. There she is found by a man who reveals himself to be Loki, and her initial distrust of him transforms into a deep and abiding love.

Publisher's Summary
In 1945, former combat nurse Claire Randall returns from World War II and joins her husband for a second honeymoon. Their blissful reunion is shattered when she touches a boulder in an ancient stone ruin and is instantly transported to 1743 Scotland, a place torn by war and raiding border clans. Will Claire find her way back to her own time, or is her destiny forever linked with Clan MacKenzie and the gallant James Fraser?
What the critics say
"Davina Porter maintains the distinct voices she creates for each character throughout the lengthy narration. Her delivery of 18th-century language sounds authentic and is easily understandable." (AudioFile)
Editorial Review
Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander is the first book in a series of fantastic historical fiction that blends real-life history with mythical and magical themes. This first novel follows the main character British nurse Claire Randall on her travels in the Scottish Highlands, where she falls through time after encountering ancient standing stones on Fraser’s Ridge. She is immediately thrown into the hectic world of 18th Century Scotland and forced to adapt quickly to assimilate and - hopefully - find her way home again. From the highlands to old-world North Carolina, the storyline is a twisting and turning adventure of war, romance - in the rugged yet kind Jamie Fraser- destiny, and fate, which will capture you from the start and not let go until the very end. Genre blending and unique, Gabaldon weaves aspects of love stories with history and time travel and adventure for an exciting and highly entertaining story.
Davina Porter narrates the audiobook version, which brings the epic story to life in a new way. She has narrated over 400 audiobooks in her time, including several classics, and she brings her wealth of experience to this reading for a stunning performance. She was awarded the AudioFile Golden Voice narrator for this series. Her attention to small details and nuances in the story makes for a beautiful audio experience, whether you’re familiar with the series or hearing it for the first time. Fans of the story can enjoy more of Gabaldon’s world in the Lord John Grey companion novels.

Amazing!
I fell in love with the Outlander TV series. I knew I would not be able to tackle the books with my busy schedule and inability to stay awake at night (read: mom of 4!). The audio book is just as charming (or more) as the show. It transports me to another place (like stepping through the stones from my Canadian kitchen to 18th century Scotland). Davina Porter does an amazing job with the voices and accents. Can’t wait to listen to another of her works. #Audible1

I could listen to Davina Porter all day
I have read this series and now listened to the first in the series and I still love it. The story flows beautifully, descriptions are gorgeous and the history is accurate with the lovely embellishments that make Gabaldon a great story teller. Davina Porter is a masterful narrator. I will continue to listen to the series because of the way she brings the characters alive.

Favourite book of all time
Listening to these books is by far the most enjoyable format. The narrator is absolutely excellent and brings out all the characters personalities so well, particularly Claire and Jamie. Whether you've never heard of Outlander before, or only ever watched the show, buy this audiobook. This is my second time with this book, but first time listening to it, though I've listened to later books, and I'll listen to it many more times I'm sure.

Really enjoyed this, would recommend
I really love this story. I had a hard time for the first couple of chapters as I thought the narrators voice sounded too old. I quickly started to enjoy her and ended up loving her style and really loved it. Also there are some parts of background noise (coughing in several spots, and some talking), a bit distraing. Overall, I look forward to listening to the rest of this series and hope its the same narrator.
