Largely A Troubling Testimonial.. That Falls Apart
This book starts like a "journaling" assignment from a therapist counseling a survivor of an abusive relationship: urging her to write down her experiences. Strikingly relatable girl-next-door 'Freya' tells a sadly familiar story: starting with "swept-off-her-feet" romance/seduction and collapsing into red-flags -> jealousy/possessiveness/isolation -> physical/sexual abuse. Unfortunately, Patricia Dixon's initially realistic antagonist 'Kane' is revealed to be a cartoonishly evil scumbag (involved in car theft rings, drug dealing, international money laundering, and underground sex clubs/snuff film production). The final third of 'Over My Shoulder' - after Freya finally leaves - is ludicrously silly.. turning into an "escape the kidnappers" story.
Yes, Freya's harrowing personal tale devolves into over-the-top obvious fiction - but still has some disturbingly true-to-life elements (Trigger Warnings for readers who have survived abuse are warranted).
Reader Helen MacFarlane's performance is genuinely praiseworthy (her Manchester accent for Freya is absolutely spot-on, for example).. but Whole Story/QUEST Audio/W.F.Howes sound editors do a terrible job splicing re-recorded segments into the overall product - sound levels aren't matched *at all*.
The audiobook isn't "bad" per se, but sounds somewhat lazily thrown together.
Factoring in the subpar sound quality, this recording rates a mere 4.5 out of 10 stars. It was a reasonable download as a 'Plus' selection (included with my membership).. but spending a Credit on it would be indefensible.
