Histoire
After seven years of bitter war, the end has come at last for the conflict known infamously as the Horus Heresy. Terra now lies within the Warmaster’s sights, the Throneworld and the seat of his father’s rule. Horus’ desire is nothing less than the death of the Emperor of Mankind and the utter subjugation of the Imperium. He has become the ascendant vessel of Chaos and amassed a terrible army with which to enact his will and vengeance. But the way to the Throne will be hard as the primarch Rogal Dorn, the Praetorian and protector of Terra, marshals the defences.

Histoire
Exile to the miserable world of Sedh, the disgraced Necron Lord Oltyx is consumed with bitterness. Once heir to the throne of a dynasty, he now commands nothing but a dwindling garrison of warriors, in a never-ending struggle against Ork invaders. Oltyx can think of nothing but the prospect of vengeance against his betrayers, and the reclamation of his birthright. But the Orks are merely the harbingers of a truly unstoppable force. Unless Oltyx acts to save his dynasty, revenge will win him only ashes.

Now, cast adrift from the Emperor's light and hunted as heretics after their monstrous betrayal, the Night Lords clad themselves in symbols of death and fight the Long War, bringing pain and terror to all who worship the corpse-god of Terra. A summons from Warmaster Abaddon sends these rebels on a dangerous journey that leads inexorably to a conflict with the Emperor's chosen warriors, the Blood Angels.

Description
Book one in the Bequin series.
Listen to it because:
It's an intriguing and evocative story that shows characters you know and love through new (yet strangely familiar) eyes, forging a stunning mystery that will leave you astonished.
The story:
In the city of Queen Mab, nothing is quite as it seems. Pariah, spy and Inquisitorial agent Alizebeth Bequin is all of these things and yet none of them. An enigma, even to herself, she is caught between Inquisitors Gregor Eisenhorn and Gideon Ravenor, former allies now enemies who are playing a shadow game against a mysterious and deadly foe. Coveted by the archenemy, pursued by the Inquisition, Bequin becomes embroiled in a dark plot of which she knows not her role or purpose. Helped by a disparate group of allies, she must unravel the secrets of her life and past if she is to survive a coming battle in which the line between friends and foes is fatally blurred.

Not on par with the author usual works
While listening to this, I wondered if the author wanted to write a 40k novel or to cather to another aufience. Slow paced, main chatacter is bland and dabbles in some tropes "au lieu" of a real personnality.
Good use of the blank abilities, but hard to find the main character interesting or sympathetic, in this, the main character is truly unique compared to other "blank" story or perspectives.

Hard to get into
Narration was not strong. Story took a long time to get going. If you do not have a solid understanding of the previous inquisition books (Eisenhorn & Ravenor) , this book is much more confusing.

Continues an amazing series
Amazing book
it's a bit jarring coming from the full eisenhorn/ravenor books with Toby narrating to this...over 70 hours of Toby narrating each character to have them suddenly change really throws you off. But she still does a good job and obviously it's told from bequin perspective so it make sense.

Slow Burn
The story for me felt very backloaded in actual intrigue, as the first half is mostly set up for the character of Bequin and the goings-on, but around halfway it starts to pick up and become engaging. Overall pretty solid if you can handle a slower start with a lot of description.

Great
I read this before reading Eisenhorn and Ravenor . I didnt know it was basically part 3 of a wider series . After the two in this I went back and went through Eisenhorn then Ravenor . Probably not the best way to go about it but I can say even without I had a good time with this. I only got the information As Bequin got them ,so if something was new to her it was new to me .
