Publisher's Summary

Life in the magical mess of the Detroit Free Zone is never easy. When you’re laboring under the curse of a certain prideful, overbearing dragon, it can be down right impossible.

My name is Opal Yong-ae, and I’m a Cleaner. At least, I used to be. Thanks to the supernatural bad luck that turns everything I do against me, these days I’m more of a walking disaster. Getting rid of this curse is the only way to get my life back. Unfortunately, dragon magic is every bit as sneaky and deadly as the monsters behind it, and just as hard to beat.

But I’ve never been one to take her doom at face value. Cornered doesn’t mean defeated, and in an awakened city that rules herself, dragons are no longer the biggest powers around.

Featured Article: The Best Female Narrators You Can Listen To All Day

When considering a new audiobook, one of the biggest questions listeners have is whether they’ll enjoy the narration style. This is understandable as audiobooks span at least a few hours, and sticking with one person’s voice for that period can feel like a big commitment. Luckily, there are so many excellent voice actors performing audiobooks that you might just find yourself gravitating to certain audiobooks based solely on the narrator’s strength.

Book 1 is better

There is a lot of repetition - you'd think this is a book for young kids by the number of times a fact or feeling is told to us again and again (even more than in the first book).
All the concepts are amazing - the world is rich and interesting as well as the characters... but something in the book just falls flat. I think it's the fact that the main character keeps on saying she is useless and by the end of the story I've come to believe it. She is useless, despite all the tools she should have (intelligence, education, magic...). We are told that she used to make bank, and that she can move couches by herself, and so on... but when it comes down to it, a lot of the time it doesn't seem like it. It feels like the author doesn't know her character completely. Maybe I'd just like it if she accepted that some things are out of her control and that's fine rather than hearing her feel useless, try something stupid, and then blame herself.

I'd say hold back on this one until we see what book 3 brings us. I hope it's not more of the same and the main character can either stop being the damsel in distress or come to terms with it.

No sophmore slump here, imo

After listening to the first book I wasn't in a rush to dive into this book. I felt the first book shallow and gimicky. But I am really busy and need something I would come in and out of without feeling like I missed too much. I also wanted to know if Opal and Nic were going to get togeather. (-_o)

I would disagree that it is the weaker of the two books. The first book was interesting concept but I liked that there was more character development in this book. Particularly how Opal is more imperfect in this book. While I can see how lt might annoy somepeople, because the first person narration the character is self aware of her own self adsorption and often needs to rationalise her choices to the reader. I am interesting to see what kind of person she can become.

Where it does fall short the author claerly has a longer series in mind and tried to put too many story lines in one book. Which fair warning none of them really get resolved in this book. Surprisingly most of the story lines are relatable. Realizing your parents are trying their best, the complications of having a platonic yet intamate friendship with people of the opposite gender, the world no longer excepting the narrative that the hero is a victim ext...

If you liked the first book I recomend giving this one a go.

Pretty good

Book was pretty good. Liked the characters. The reader was good but I really disliked the voice used for the dragon/father. It made my throat hurt just to listen to it!!

What a Great Sequel!

Before I get started, I love this series. I think the worldbuilding, the magic, and the characters are all fantastic. I am eager to read NIGHT SHIFT DRAGONS and then every other book that Rachel Aaron has written because, honestly, SO good.

One of the coolest things about this series is the setting. The DFZ is a city run by a magical God, it has buildings that move and change. If you default on your rent, then your place goes on the auction block, for someone like Opal and her newly acquired partner, Nick, bid on it against others, for the opportunity to make money on anything left inside and clean it up for the city to rent out again.

Opal has a few problems in her life right now. She tried to outwit a dragon, who just happened to be her father (long story) and ended up with a huge loan to pay off to him. She was doing really good at it too until said Dragon put a curse on her to make it even harder for her to make the money to pay him back. Dragons. Now with the help of Nick, a cybernetically enhanced human with a questionable past, Opal is trying to find a way to not default on her load so she can be free from under anyone’s control.

I do like Opal for the most part. She has a lot of magical power potential and has tried her entire life to do anything with it but unfortunately most of the time it just ends up blowing up in her face. Girl also has some HUGE daddy issues, probably to be expected when you know you were named Opal because you are seen by your father as a pretty stone of little worth . Opal has a huge chip on her shoulder and she is going to prove to everyone that she can do it all on her own.

Good news is there is a smidgen of a romance happening between Opal and Nick. It has a few kinks in it but I liked the start up of a possible relationship between them. We also get some time talking with the Spirit of the City and we get to see some of the motivations of a god walking among the people.

The downfall is this story doesn’t wrap up at the end, we are left with a bit of a cliffhanger and will have to wait until the next book to see how all of the events play out.

I enjoyed Minimum Wage Magic just a little more than Part-Time Gods, just because of the situation Opal was in, how laser focused she was on the tree she missed the forest. Still a lot of things happened and I have some big hopes for the next installment.

TLDR: I am so in love with this series. So many different elements that work together in an interesting way. I think this is such a fun series that takes a look at family dynamics, curses, and magic in a way that doesn't make me want to bash my head against a wall. Highly recommend!

Worth It!

This series is so addictive! And this is the first audiobook that has had me whooping and hollering in response to the events. I was captivated by every second, and plan to hopping straight into the next.

Not wowed but still good.

Overall the universe is good but the story is getting a bit formulaic and was a bit rushed at the end. Not bad and still compelling but it was more like "well finally she got them" kind of catharsis rather than "wow that's totally mind blowing." Though given the new occupation change at the end there it does make me want to find out how things pan out in the next book. Now if you'll excuse me that's exactly what I'm going to do.

Beautifully frustrating and unpredictable.

Loved this even better than the first book. There is a lot of repetition, which works for an audiobook format, but the story has so many twists and turns that leave me on the edge of my seat, even for the parts I thought may have been boring. Also, as a reader who started with the DFZ series, this is an awesome blend of deeper exposition and plot with high stakes at every turn. As for performance, Zeller loses Nik's accent slightly in this one, but my goodness, her range of voices and subtle but definitive changes of personality in this book absolutely blew me away. Amazing work with that!

Really interesting and imaginative!

I really liked the characters. Their motivations felt real and believable. The world was interesting and exciting. It was a cool view point to do a great story. Thanks for the book!
