Publisher's Summary

The definitive history of Rome’s golden age—an ultimate superpower at the pinnacle of its greatness

The Pax Romana has long been shorthand for the empire’s golden age. Stretching from Caledonia to Arabia, Rome ruled over a quarter of the world’s population. It was the wealthiest and most formidable state in the history of humankind.

Pax is a captivating narrative history of Rome at the height of its power. From the gilded capital to realms beyond the frontier, historian Tom Holland shows ancient Rome in all its glory: Nero’s downfall, the destruction of Jerusalem and Pompeii, the building of the Colosseum and Hadrian’s Wall, the conquests of Trajan. Vividly sketching the lives of Romans both ordinary and spectacular, from slaves to emperors, Holland shows that Roman peace was the fruit of unprecedented military violence.

A stunning portrait of Rome’s glory days, this is the epic history of the Pax Romana.

Enlightening

I like Tom Holland's take on an this period of Roman history. I am also pleased Tom decided to narrate his own work. Overall I am pleased with this production.

Great book!

This is a lovely literary jaunt through the period known as the Pax Romana. This is a long way from the brusk lectures I’ve heard where “this date this happened, then this date that happened”. The book is filled with antidotes and personalized prospectives of the people covered, bring their stories to life.

Excellent as always but confused by the ending

As always Tom Hollands book is incredible, after spending an enormous amount of time on the year of the 4 emperors. A conflict largely glossed over in most histories, it felt like the golden age of the Antonines was left rushed and incomplete.

The book ends with the death of Hadrian, I found myself shocked to see only 30 minutes left with at least 40 more years of the 5 good emperors to go.

I am if the opinion that from a narrative perspective taking us through Antoninus Pius and Marcus Aurelius would have made more sense, or even ending it with the neroesque rule of Comidus.

Im sure the crisis of the 3rd century is next and he’ll cover the end of Rome’s golden age in that. I just didn’t want to wait another few years for it!

Not gripping

I'm sure the author put lots of effort into this and it's a quality work, but it's not for me, as someone looking to be guided through history by a smooth narrative. This book reads more like you're sitting in a room with a bunch of experts on the Roman empire, and they're just talking, making references to people and events you're not familiar with. Also, the chronology isn't in order, so one moment it's the second century A,D., and then later you realize a long story going on for the last ten minutes took place in the 68 A.D., and then suddenly he's talking about some woman disconnected with that story.

Stunningly Good, Of Course!

Pax is a delicious journey through the apex of Roman power, all the while hinting at its eventual downfall and transformation.I could not have enjoyed this book more, simply because the author, Tom Holland, provided the deft and thoughtful narration. This book is so good and comprehensive, I will be listening to it more than once. The author helps us see clearly, the foundational aspects of Roman civilization and its culture, as recognizable and yet wildly different from our own. Exquisitely written and narrated.

It’s well researched.

It’s really doesn’t flow as well as his other books. I was excited to read to this too. It’s just not his best work. Still enjoyed it.

Apotheosis of Roman History

Tom Holland is his own best narrator. His exquisite prose is concise and wise. It leaves you vibrating like a great piece of music.

Tom Holland delivers like a Triumphant Caesar once again…

This addition to his narrative of Roman history is a masterpiece of storytelling, even after having knowledge of the main events of this period, Tom Holland will make connections that delight and surprise. If one is interested in the era of Rome at its climax, look no further, this book belongs in the pantheon of great Roman histories.

So many trees, I can’t see the wood

I’m struggling with this one. I really wanted to like it because Tom Holland’s history podcast is so wonderful. Unfortunately, this is something very different indeed. The promise is a great overview and big picture of the Pax Romana. That isn’t what it delivers. Instead, the story gets lost in the minutiae, and with a few exceptions what it ends up being is a list of names out of that never have faces, attached to an endless series of battles, and intrigues and backstabbing, but without any real context. The impression I’m less left with is a kind of A begat B, B begat C, C begat D, and I’m really having a lot of trouble maintaining interest in it. I may actually have to give up, which is a real pity.
