Publisher's Summary

Based on the latest research on brain development and extensive clinical experience with parents, Dr. Laura Markham's approach is as simple as it is effective. Her message: Fostering emotional connection with your child creates real and lasting change. When you have that vital connection, you don't need to threaten, nag, plead, bribe - or even punish.

This remarkable guide will help parents better understand their own emotions - and get them in check - so they can parent with healthy limits, empathy, and clear communication to raise a self-disciplined child. Step-by-step examples give solutions and kid-tested phrasing for parents of toddlers right through the elementary years.

If you're tired of power struggles, tantrums, and searching for the right "consequence", look no further. You're about to discover the practical tools you need to transform your parenting in a positive, proven way.

Aimed at babies, toddlers, and preschool age

Interesting information but it’s really aimed at the younger kids before Primary grades. Wish there was something similar for the more complex elementary years.

A gentle parenting MUST READ

If you're considering an AP approach to parenting and you want to understand how and why the approach works, as well as how to model your day to day interactions with your child with the principals in mind, I consider this book a must read. The advice is easy to follow and really helped me wrap my mind around effective discipline that promotes healthy development, respect, and love.

Will put you to sleep

Although this book has helpful tips, she talks in circles and puts off answering your questions for as long as possible. She does give examples and tells us that we should explain situations and such but fails to give advice in the same situation on HOW we should discipline them when they begin to full on scream and throw themselves on the floor.

best parenting advice with great examples!

When I was quite new at parenting, I wish there was a guide that I can learn and practice worda by words. I read other parenting books, went to workshops, and even had a counsellor who was practicing mindfullness. They couldn't answer my questions: how can I stop threatening my child? how can I raise my child in a calm environment? how can I stop yelling at my child which it only works for the moment? how can I make my child confident? does reward and decipline work? this book had all the answers to that and resources to practice. The reader's voice was very reassuring and making me focus on the book. I'll be listening to this book many more times and all of the author's other books.

Good book but…

I quite like this book - it describes a complete approach to practice parenting and many common parenting situations with kids of all ages. There is a wealth of insights and lots of hands on examples and scenarios.

The but part comes in two places. The first is that Dr Markham’s methods are based on an incredibly high EQ approach - to the point of being out of reach for most people. This sets the bar for ‘good parenting’ very high, and many parents I’ve spoken to have mentioned feeling discouraged and guilty when they struggle to adopt this approach successfully. It’s still highly worth trying, but prepare your self accordingly.

The second is the book largely excludes and ignores the role of fathers in the parenting process. Virtually all of Dr Markham’s examples and anecdotes are built around mothers or female contributors. Two parent approaches are mentioned only rarely, and I haven’t seen any examples from fathers - men in general are notably missing from her many quotes, anecdotes and illustrations.

This aspect of her work has aged very poorly and looks like a form of chauvinism in today’s environment, as well as in light of modern research about the positive impact fathers have in the lives of their children.

All in all, I recommend reading the book, but I think it’s important to be clear on its limitations.

Life changing!

I often find titbits of valuable advice in self help books but nothing as ground breaking as this. The ideas and advice has really changed how I think and act towards my children. It gave me my children's perspective of negativity, scolding and punishment. I have come to realise that I too suffer from generations of anger and bad parenting habits, and I hope I can now change this cycle for my children.
