Publisher's Summary

There is a difference between exercise and training. Exercise is physical activity for its own sake, a workout done for the effect it produces today, during the workout or right after you're through. Training is physical activity done with a longer-term goal in mind, the constituent workouts of which are specifically designed to produce that goal. Training is how athletes prepare to win, and how all motivated people approach physical preparation.

Practical Programming for Strength Training - 3rd Edition addresses the topic of training. It details the mechanics of the process, from the basic physiology of adaptation to the specific programs that apply these principles to novice, intermediate, and advanced lifters.

  • Each section completely updated
  • Better explanations of the proven programs that have been helping hundreds of thousands of lifters get stronger more efficiently
  • Expanded novice section with the details of 3 different approaches to the problem of getting stuck and special approaches for the underweight and overweight trainee
  • Expanded intermediate section with 18 separate programs and 11 detailed examples
  • Expanded advanced section with detailed examples of 9 different programs
  • Expanded special populations section with example programs for women and masters lifters training through their 50s, 60s, 70s, and 80s
  • Day-to-day, workout-to-workout, week-by-week detailed programs for every level of training advancement

The most comprehensive audiobook on the theory and practice of programming for strength training.

Needs a PDF

Definitely would benefit having a PDF, particularly for the programming. Content is great as expected.

good but could use a pdf download

It is a very comprehensive book, but really should have a pdf download for the missing images.

Do not purchase

Should absolutely NOT purchase this audio book. The content is legitimate, intelligent, and understood. I have an MS in Exercise Physiology and am CSCS certified, and I was listening while driving a trip. I figured I could pick up a few things listening and refresh a few concepts, as good professionals should often do. However, throughout the book, it’s admittedly stated that “those of you that care to see the table should buy the hardback copy of the book.” How about being a professional author and caring instructor through providing a PDF file for your audible readers as opposed to the lack of information provided in tables and graphics. Novels all over audible provide PDFs with important tables and information, and the fact that this book does not do so is extremely disappointing. I was hoping for more.

Extremely biased, but some good info

Much of this book should be taken with a grain of salt, including his oddly discriminatory views on cardio and endurance training and literally saying "health is not of concern, strength is", as if the two are mutually exclusive. That being said, this also has a lot of great information on strength programming and progressive overloading. This book, in conjunction with "starting strength" are necessities for anyone looking to get started in or up their game with strength training properly. Could go without Mark's sarcasm and dismissive tone about anything that doesn't agree with his ideas, but overall a good book to have and go over from time to time.

PDF

How hard is it to add the pdf?! Why keep “encouraging”us to buy the actual book to get the pdf. I bought the audio book for a specific reason. I’m not buying a second version to get all I paid for already.

No PDF of the graphs constantly referenced

No PDF of the graphs constantly referenced. Good luck following along. This audiobook is not like Starting Strength that can be supplemented with his YouTube channel. Waste of time.

A must-read for anyone with a body

This book should be required reading for students taking Physical Education classes in high school, or at the very least college.

Such incredible insights and knowledge. I began applying the training as soon as I could and have seen tremendous results.

Now my brother and a friend are both following the program and seeing incredible results as well. And my brother, who went to school for exercise science is even impressed with the results.

Read this and apply it!

Good when paired with the physical book.

I purchased this book after reading Starting Strength. My favorite thing is that Mark Rippetoe is an excellent reader and makes for an easy listen. My least favorite thing about him is that he often rips on the ACSM, sometimes to the extent that he detracts from his overall point (This happened in the beginning of the book where he explained the ACSM physical activity guidelines) Aside from his palpable negative opinions of the ACSM, the content is clearly organized and beneficial to anyone approaching the intermediate state of their lifting career (that is why i chose this book)

I have 2 copies of this book, one paperback and one audio. I have found this works well for me so I can listen while driving and review while at home. The audio book isn’t able to express the graphics and charts as well as the paperback so its worth the extra cost if you are interested in the programming.

Amazing book

This book was exactly what I was looking for regarding strength training. No BS, scientific, and also experienced based observations and facts about how to build strength for sports performance, or for the person who just wants to get stronger and may be confused about all the literature and hype that’s out there. Get this book, read it, understand it, apply it, and never look book.
