“Thrilling and illuminating."—LA Times

"A hypnotic psychological thriller.” —People

A chance encounter sparks an unrelenting web of lies in this gripping and complex psychological thriller from the New York Times bestselling author of The Good Girl.

Heidi Wood has always been a charitable woman: she works for a nonprofit and takes in stray cats. Still, her husband and daughter are horrified when Heidi returns home one day with a young woman named Willow and her four-month-old baby in tow. Disheveled and apparently homeless, this girl could be a criminal—or worse. But despite her family’s objections, Heidi invites Willow and the baby to take refuge in their home.

Heidi spends the next few days helping Willow get back on her feet, but as clues into Willow’s past begin to surface, Heidi is forced to decide how far she’s willing to go to help a stranger. What begins as an act of kindness quickly spirals into a story far more twisted than anyone could have anticipated.

Hard to get through...

I really want to love this story, and I have to say I am interested to find out where it's going! But at about 2 hours in, the style of writing starts to get on my nerves. Overly contrived descriptions that make me think the author doesn't actually know what the events she is trying to describe are really like. I can't get on board with it and am pulled right out of the story. Overdone colour descriptions - everything is indigo or magenta or burgundy that add nothing extra to the imagery (never just a simple blue or red!). Once you start to notice it, it becomes kind of funny. The backstory on the characters are nothing new, slowly released through flashback style chapters. I have yet to be surprised by anything, most importantly the story line that is meant to be shocking and disturbing. Same old. And the narrator has such a slow way of speaking, the story proceeds slowly enough! I don't think I'll get through 12 hours of it.

Worth the $

In my opinion, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I bought it on sale because it was one of the more decent sounding ones, and was surprised as to how much I enjoyed it. It not only held my attention, but kept me guessing as to what was going to happen next. I definitely recommend this audiobook.

Mehh

There are some neat concepts in this book. If a person uses their imagination they could see the potential. Ultimately the book lacks a refinement and cohesity that leaves this noval unpolished and unfinished. If you have nothing better to do you will at least come away with a few fun facts you might not have known before.

snooze

Repetitive and boring. Helped put me to sleep though. The narration was annoying too.

A Slog

Didn't know it was a Harlequin when I started... Needed three narrators because the cardboard characters all seem to speak with the same voice. Not sure why I even finished listening to it as the slog thru early syrup got harder and harder as syrup turned to treacle. I will look closer at the meta data before purchasing the daily deal next time.

Not a psychological thriller as described!

The story wasn't a bad one, but I totally purchased under the description of a psychological thriller. This was more of a subtle mystery and that is perhaps a stretch. I also found it quite predicable. The narrators were pretty good. But I IMO this is just an easy listen and more of a drama.

Over the Top

The premise is fine and the plot is fine but the character of Heidi is ridiculous and demeaning.

Good but predictable

It's a good story but becomes predictable halfway through. There is a major character escalation that I wish would have taken longer to unfold - instead of going from 0 to 100.
