Publisher's Summary

From the author of Silence of the Lambs, it's the terrifying tale that introduced the world to Hannibal "the Cannibal" Lecter. There's a serial killer on the loose who specializes in murdering innocent, happy families, and now it's up to FBI Special Agent Will Graham to understand the brutal killer's motivation and anticipate his next move. Graham needs to get inside the killer's mind; to do that, he needs the help of Dr. Hannibal Lecter, the brilliant and vicious mass murderer whom Graham locked away years ago. The psychotic psychiatrist Lecter guides Graham deep into the Red Dragon's twisted world of demonic ritual and violence.

What the critics say

"Red Dragon is an engine designed for one purpose - to make the pulse pound, the heart palpitate, the fear glands secrete." (The New York Times Book Review)

Kinda cheesy

The book is good, but the reader is really cringey at times, especially when he tries to do the accents for the different characters.

Accidentally Bingeable. Partially Cringe Reader

Let me start off by staying that this is a fantastic book and that, despite the slightly weird reading performance, that did not change my experience or appreciation for this fantastic novel. It's a truly great, suspenseful and tension-heavy prequel to Silence of the Lambs. I've read the book in High School countless times, and it's still great after many years. A great, thrilling story to listen to, and even better if you're already invested in the Hannibal Lecter series. A small thing to note is that Hannibal himself is not a major character in this novel, and instead follows the thoughts and actions of both FBI special investigator Will Graham, Jack Crawford's protege, and the Great Red Dragon, serial murderer and Lecter's avid fan. Despite Lecter's lack of existence in this novel, his actions are still heavily existent and of great importance in the story.

Great performance and plot

Loved this. Just wish there was an unabridged version in the store. The full version should be about 12 hours.

Behold the Great Red Dragon

The Red Dragon
Many of you may know Sir Anthony Hopkins iconic role as Hannibal Lecter. As a fan of the movie's I have chosen to listen to the original stories by Thomas Harris.
As expected the novel has many differences from the movie adaptation. Oddly the movies, both Red Dragon and Man Hunter, do keep a lot of the book in them.
The book still fills in much more about France Dollarhides background and mental issues.
I very much enjoyed listening to stories involving my favorite antihero. I recommend this book wholeheartedly. If just to see the birth of Hannibal the cannibal. In a very short iconic appearance when Will Gram comes to interview Lector
As ever and always many sincere thanks to everyone involved in making this audiobook and getting it out to the public.

Butchered

Great narration, but the text is so heavily abridged that the flow and style of the story is destroyed.

Can't finish it.

This is disappointing. I got through the others in this series fine but I am unable to finish this one due to the Narrator. The fake accents and weird performance are unbearable. He makes Hannibal sound annoying and weasely.

Horrible, absolutely HORRIBLE.

Poorly edited, too short

This abridged audiobook is not very well edited. There is much of the thrill missing compared to the original book, and it comes across as disjointed and choppy.

The narrator voices Jack Crawford as a snivelling old wheeze and Francis Dolarhyde comes across as a dumbass. Reba, a sympathetic and intelligent character in the book, just sounds like an airhead.
