Publisher's Summary

A New York Times Bestseller!

A Read With Jenna Today Show Book Club Pick!

Remarkably Bright Creatures is a beautiful examination of how loneliness can be transformed, cracked open, with the slightest touch from another living thing.” -- Kevin Wilson, author of Nothing to See Here

For fans of A Man Called Ove, a charming, witty and compulsively listenable exploration of friendship, reckoning, and hope that traces a widow's unlikely connection with a giant Pacific octopus

After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago.

Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

Ever the detective, Marcellus deduces what happened the night Tova’s son disappeared. And now Marcellus must use every trick his old invertebrate body can muster to unearth the truth for her before it’s too late.

Shelby Van Pelt’s debut novel is a gentle reminder that sometimes taking a hard look at the past can help uncover a future that once felt impossible.

What the critics say

"This fantastical debut audiobook will enchant listeners. Gifted vocal artist Marin Ireland portrays Tova, a 70-year-old widow with a heart of gold whose teenage son died under mysterious circumstances 30 years earlier. Ireland's encouraging tones suit Tova, whose compassion touches everyone, and every creature, in her small Washington town.... A fanciful and enjoyable listening experience." (AudioFile)

Beautiful, tragic, uplifting… in my top 5 EVER

I’m lazy about reviewing books. Even when I love them. I’m also a voracious reader with favorites like Prodigal Summer, Where the Crawdads Sing, Sophie‘s World, The Way the Crow Flies… And I will say that this book is well in the top five, though I haven’t decided yet exactly where.

If you enjoyed reading the books above, you’ll love this one. I laughed out loud, ugly cried hard enough that my dogs were worried about me, but I also felt hopeful and joyful.

So from someone who’s probably read 10,000 books and has only ever reviewed a couple, trust me that this is a book well worth reading.

Technical notes: The narration is superb with excellent voice representation of each character. In the story… Well, let’s just say I’m in love with Marsellus.

Wonderful

I had read that after watching My Octopus teacher Remarkably Bright Creatures would be a good book to read. We were first introduced to Cameron, his friends and Aunt Jean. Cameron’s search for his father led us to Ethan. We then found ourselves at the aquarium, where Tova worked, and Marcellus. I lost my son tragically at the age of 11, and I was adopted. I couldn’t put the book down or stop listening. I was full of hope, searching with them for their unanswered questions, peace and happiness.
Loved this book. ❤️

Marcellus the Octopus

Marcellus the octopus gets his own voice. It’s so well read. The story itself is rich, moving and funny. The author dragged the suspense at 2/3 of the book by adding some sitcom-like chapters, but it’s all forgiven.

I can no longer eat calamari!

Great story and characters. Marcellus is a fantastic fellow. Could read a whole book about him. The stakes stay high right to the perfect ending.

An incredibly delightful tale of discovery, yearning and love.

I was captivated by this sweet and savoury story. What fun to hear the voice of an octopus with both a brain and a devilish sense of humour. Lots of twists, like tentacles, to make me smile and laugh out loud! Truly a one-of-a-kind novel!!
