Never had a moment where I thought the story was slowing down and becoming uninteresting and the fact that chapters are read by a man or a woman depending on if it's from Nova's point of view or Adrian's completely blew my freaking mind.

It's a good book
I loved the duel perspective. The narration was really well done. However this book feels like an introduction story. and to be fair it is. I would say this book introduces is to the world. the next book sets up the conflict. And I'm hoping the third book pulls through with an amazing ending because the set up is done so well. I'm really looking forward to have some of my questions answered and have some of the dramatic irony revealed to the characters, because this book is full of dramatic irony.

This book is great. I love the overall theme of people with super powers and surprisingly I loved the crushes and love drama in the book. it is very relatable even though I am almost in my 30's and the characters in the book were teenagers. The writer did a fantastic job on portraying the characters' thoughts and emotions. #Audible1

Only 1 question...
Does the narrator, the 3rd person narrator no less, have to sound so pissed the ENTIRE narrative? I’m only a few chapters in, and completely distracted. The story seems great, but Rebecca Soler has me gritting my teeth the entire time because it’s like she’s spitting out every single word in absolute fury. It’s hard not to feel angry myself. Maybe that’s good? But gee, I kind of want to relax a bit. I feel for the character, but this is intense. Can I handle a whole book of this? Stay tuned.

Great writing and great themes!
This is my first Melissa Meyer book and I had low expectations, but this novel was pretty good. It had a ton of action, unique superpowers and a cute almost-romance thrown in there. I really enjoyed the plot and dual points of view. I also really enjoyed Nova’s journey, her emotional conflict at seeing and experiencing the lives of her enemies up close, her problem-solving skills and her true heroics in spite of officially being a villain. Throughout the book, I always had a guess for where the story was headed, or what upcoming twist might be thrown our way, but I was always wrong—which is a good thing! I love not being able to anticipate a character’s actions or guess the direction of the plot spot-on. It gives the book more excitement. The twist at the end was great too. Adrian, Ruby, Oscar and Honey were all great characters too. I really enjoyed the altruism of Adrian and could identify a lot with his mindset sometimes. He’s a little cinnamon roll with some rebellious icing on top and I love it. I can’t wait to see more of his own emotional journey. I also LOVED that he had two dads. #Ally #AllyPride #Representation This book also has some GREAT themes at work. What makes a villain and what makes a hero? (I enjoyed that there were heroes that really acted more like villains and vice versa) What is the danger of relying on others to save us rather than ourselves (the idea of learned helplessness)? How dangerous is freedom and how dangerous is strict order (where is the line;where is the balance)? And the biggest theme of identity. I did want to see what the “ridiculous” Council laws were. I didn’t feel Meyer did the greatest job of defining the Council-ruled world. She was great at giving us a summary picture, but I wanted to see specifics that enraged me as much as they enraged Nova. Meyer needed to give me that evidence that the Council’s world was flawed before I could fully get on board with Nova and her mission and I don’t feel like I ever got that. Also having two names for every single character was confusing and exhausting. I get it; it’s a superhero world and everyone has a superhero alias and a real name—and I love the deeper theme of “which identity is the REAL you?”—but with a full roster of characters already, it makes everything more difficult when you have two names to keep track of for each. Despite these complaints, I’m looking forward to the next book!

I want more!
This is my first review on audible. This book was so exciting that I felt I needed to write one. If you've read the Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer and enjoyed that series you will probably enjoy this as well. It is a very different world Meyer has created here compared to the one in the Lunar Chronicles. It's all about super powered humans and it is so well done. Though, I've read countless super hero comics in my time. This is the first novel I've delved into in the genre. I've got to say it is a good one. The narration was great as well. I can't wait for the next book! Highly recommended.

Like conclusions? This book isn't for you...
I want to start by saying I was hooked on this book from the first two pages. I listened to it in no time at all and brought up so many questions and great characters you want to get to know and learn. However every question thats asked in this story is regrettably absent by the end of the book where the author throws a lame plot twist then forces you to read the second book in order to find any closure. If you like a story thats a great standalone than this isnt for you. Oh, and your favorite character? You wont learn any back story about them at all. Amazing story potential, flawed execution. Also the two readers was kind of meh, the male reader was a bit cringe. 3/5 stars I would most certainly recommend it to my friends.

interesting, but disappointingly slow and thin
Fans of Meyer's Lunar Chronicles will gobble this up. The setup is unique and intriguing. Meyer's world almost convincingly treads a line between believable sci-fi and comic book sha-zam. In this world, many people have super powers, and as expected, some use them for selfish gain while others use them to benefit others. There have been 3 basic categories of super-powered people--Villain gangs, Anarchists, and Renegades. The Anarchists have been defeated by the Renegades who now are the pop stars of the society. They do the work of the police, ambulance, fire and all other service organizations. There are enough of these Renegades that the rest of the populace depends on the heroes to save them in every situation, which they usually do. However, when a Villain gang comes and kills 6-year-old Nova's family, the Renegades fail to save the day. This is the Big Event. This is Nova's Origin Story. Now her life's sole aim is to destroy the Renegades.
Nova has a few super powers of her own. We meet some others with various powers. Nova attempts to kill the Renegade Head Honcho. All this in 12 yawning chapters. None of the characters are fleshed out. There's none of the instant plunge into a fully-developed world. It takes until somewhere around chapter 12 or 13 for things to begin to get interesting. And it never quite makes it to credible super-hero world; you keep having to remind yourself of the basic premise of the book. And then it ends on a cliff-hanger, not a real ending.
Nevertheless, Nova does raise some interesting concepts: 1) is it psychologically healthy for the populace to depend on others to come save them? and 2) is it always so comic-book easy to distinguish the good guys from the bad guys? This introspection saves Nova and the book from being utterly insipid.
Meyer still struggles with her English, which she uses very well until her thesaurus fails her and she tosses in a completely wrong word. For example, Nova talks about wanting a world where people could be free, where people would not be HERALDED OVER by villain gangs. There are at least three of these in the book, but not so many as there were in the Lunar Chronicles. A really good English-speaking editor would have caught these.
Rebecca Soler does a great job giving voice to the characters. Dan Bittner is there just in case you can't tell which chapters are told from the boy's perspective.
As my 2017 most-awaited book, this one is a big disappointment. Despite that, with the Lunar Chronicles Meyer has proven that she can create a world and a plot and characters, so I will still read the next book, hoping she will step up her game.

loved it!
great story and I'm so glad the ending was very well done. left me wanting more and didn't have too big of a cliff hanger.
