Publisher's Summary

An instant New York Times best seller

A timely and passionate call to action for engaging with our current political moment, from the Grammy-nominated and multiplatinum singer-songwriter and New York Times best-selling author Tori Amos.

Since the release of her first, career-defining solo album Little Earthquakes, Tori Amos has been one of the music industry’s most enduring and ingenious artists. From her unnerving depiction of sexual assault in “Me and a Gun” to her post-September 11 album, Scarlet’s Walk, to her latest album, Native Invader, her work has never shied away from intermingling the personal with the political.

Amos began playing piano as a teenager for the politically powerful at hotel bars in Washington, DC, during the formative years of the post-Goldwater and then Koch-led Libertarian and Reaganite movements. The story continues to her time as a hungry artist in Los Angeles to the subsequent three decades of her formidable music career.

Amos explains how she managed to create meaningful, politically resonant work against patriarchal power structures - and how her proud declarations of feminism and her fight for the marginalized always proved to be her guiding light. She teaches us to engage with intention in this tumultuous global climate and speaks directly to supporters of #MeToo and #TimesUp, as well as young people fighting for their rights and visibility in the world.

Filled with compassionate guidance and actionable advice - and using some of the most powerful, political songs in Amos’ canon - this audiobook is for anyone determined to steer the world back in the right direction.

A must-read!

My eternal Tori love aside, it really did not come as a surprise that such a skilled and prolific storyteller like Tori Amos herself finally decided to put all of her experience in the music industry for over 3 decades. Just listen to her read out loud her songs (via audiobook) and you can feel the emotion, the passion, and at times the sadness, and most importantly the story in each word. Those who are familiar with her catalogue already know Tori does not like to shy away from expressing her opinion, especially about politics. It’s always been there; from her first album to the last, in interviews, in radio talks... What has impressed me the most about Resistance is how effortlessly Tori expresses herself and provides a clear sonic timeline of a history that’s utterly personal and universal at the same time, without sounding corny, condescending or overtly political. I have always admired Tori Amos as a singer, songwriter and a human being and now as a writer and can only hope there’ll be more of this in the future.

I have been listening since 1993...

I don't know why I was scared to begin this book. Perhaps, I feared the kind of a disappointment that only an American teacher during COVID-19 feels. I was not. I was, and am, blown away!

I could use another dose of Tori reading her lyrics

Tori is a true Bard , a storyteller who understands where and what stories are. Her reading the words she has penned brings life to them in a way that is undeniably inspiring and brimming with emotion. I’m so grateful this is on audible. Her lyrics, strategically placed in the book, take on a whole other life form as she reads them. I am left hoping for her to write another book and have it on audible book. I could use a Resistance Volume II where she speaks more on creativity and reads more of her lyrics. They truly live and breathe differently in this form and it is so inspiring as a songwriter to hear them in this way.....

Stellar performance by Amos

I highly recommend this audiobook. Sometimes Tori goes ‘off book’, adding words or repeating lines. She brings a passion to the reading that really moves the story along; in one moment her voice will waver with emotion and in the next she’s using a character voice to represent the muses, her past self, a music producer, or George W. Bush. I’m really grateful to have the opportunity to hear this incredibly personal, political content from Tori Amos herself.

Amazing listen!

So entertaining in so many ways. It covers every topic beyond music, history, politics, sociology, relationships, tragedies and triumphs of individuals and the world as a whole. I feel like I now know Tori better than I should know anyone that I have never met. I walk away not only a fan of her music but an even bigger fan of Tori as a person. Thank you for sharing so much of yourself.

A must read for anybody interested in the history of the USA and music from the 1970s

What a great book! And hearing it read by the author is just brilliant. Tori Amos tells 40 plus years of American politics, history through the eyes and experience of Tori Amos, one of the most incredible music performer as well as song writer. The combination of her sTori with history is simply wonderful. Let’s resist!
